About this listen
Tens of millions of people around the world are dead. Half of China is a nuclear wasteland. Mysterious flesh-eating spiders are marching through Los Angeles, Oslo, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, and countless other cities. According to scientist Melanie Gruyer, however, the spider situation seems to be looking up. Yet in Japan, a giant, truck-size glowing egg sac is discovered, even as survivors in Los Angeles panic and break the quarantine zone.
Out in the desert, survivalists Gordo and Shotgun are trying to invent a weapon to defeat the spiders. But even if they succeed it may be too late, because President Stephanie Pilgrim has been forced to enact the plan of last resort: the Spanish Protocol. Every country must fight for itself. And the spiders are on the move....

Totally riveting and utterly enjoyable; a little corny at times but what isn't these days; nonetheless disgustingly entertaining. Using the classic introduction of events which is then left unexplained until later on in the story, a tactic reminiscent of masters such as Steve King et al.This reminds me of those scary but captivating horror films I watched as a kid; a real menacing yet entertaining adventure.I listened to the whole series whilst driving to and from appointments and found myself taking longer routes just for 5 minutes more story.
Only criticism is series could be longer; Mr Boone if you read these keep going, I will definitely purchase more.
Got to go, as I can hear skittering noises outside the door?
As corny as a chicken farmers sock, but brilliant!

While I was expecting 'scarier' based on the authors Audible Session interview (free through here), I found this book was just a slight continuation saving everything for the final book of the trilogy - basically a cash cow bridging gap.
There were a few unexpected funny moments which I caught myself laughing out loud in the car, but story progression was basic (if you listen to the first story you guess what's gonna happen... and it does, but nothing more), character development limited and less tense. Shame.
Narrator is the same as the first, and continues the same if not better.
First the worst, second the best? No

All these characters and the detail they are given is great but it does create a possible issue for the reader. These aren't the longest of books so with all the characters to deal with there wasn't time to progress the main plot an awfully long way. Boone does a very decent job of pulling it together but occasionally it felt as though things were being shoe-horned in rather than genuinely adding to the story. For that reason I really do think that if, as the author has suggested this is a trilogy, then the final book really needs to leap forwards and bring it to a stunning conclusion.
The job of narrating Skitter is one hell of a tough gig with characters from here, there and everywhere. George Newburn rises manfully to the task and gives a very credible performance in the circumstances.
So, the inventiveness and character clarity adds some real meat on the bones of this series but for my personal tastes it really needs a kick-ass finale that delivers the goods for it to be a great one. Over to you Mr Boone!
A Series that needs a Big Ending!
