About this listen

5,000 years in the future, humanity faces total extermination.

Our one defence: highly-trained soldiers who scour the metal-strewn blackness of space to hunt down a terrifying enemy: an insect life-form known only as 'Bugs.'

This is the story of trooper Johnny Rico, from his idealistic enlistment in the infantry of the future through his rigorous training to the command of his own platoon. And his destiny is a war that will span the galaxy.

I liked the film back in the 90s, and I like the book too, but this is my favourite. Been waiting a long time for this to release, and it was totally worth the wait.

Bray does it again!

Great performance of a classic book, well thought out and tight - you can see how so much modern sci fi has drawn from this - definately doesn't feel like a book old enough to draw a pension!

easy to listen to, thought provoking classic sci-fi

Great book, which I’ve been meaning to get hold of since having watched the 90s film countless times. I’d gone into it knowing the source material was different to the film, so that wasn’t a surprise, and it’s fun to pick out all of the little bits that actually made it into the movie in some way (characters etc.)

The narrator, R.C. Bray, is phenomenal and really gives off an act that sounds like someone who is a through-and-through career soldier / veteran, from overall delivery to the cadence at which he speaks. Honestly, really impressed and will look forward to hearing over audiobooks done by him in the future.

A phenomenal read / listen for men of all ages. Heinlein portrays an intriguing vision of a united world fighting against multiple alien species. He masterfully laces together thrilling accounts of combat with thought provoking dives into philosophy and sociopolitical commentary, creating an unforgettable experience, which sticks with you even after finishing the book.

Loved the movie, in awe of the book!

I have always enjoyed Heinlein's Sci fi stories but his right wing political theories tend to shine through, hurting the plot in my opinion. Remember this is not the movies which poke fun at his right wing half baked theories, instead Heinlein argues that through military service one becomes a full citizen. His justification is that "it works" so it should not be changed. The Story us enjoyable just ignore the politics.

Great story, shame about the. political theory.

Ok, I brought the book for 2 reasons.
RC Bray the legend
and I really enjoyed the film.
The book is quiet different from the movie, (aren't they always) but i found i enjoyed it and finished it in 3 days.
The pace of the book is quiet good, and i don't think I got bored in any part.
Well written and I would expect they could get another few books out of this. If so I look forward to listening to them in the future.
