About this listen

5,000 years in the future, humanity faces total extermination.

Our one defence: highly-trained soldiers who scour the metal-strewn blackness of space to hunt down a terrifying enemy: an insect life-form known only as 'Bugs.'

This is the story of trooper Johnny Rico, from his idealistic enlistment in the infantry of the future through his rigorous training to the command of his own platoon. And his destiny is a war that will span the galaxy.

Not Bad

Ok, I brought the book for 2 reasons.
RC Bray the legend
and I really enjoyed the film.
The book is quiet different from the movie, (aren't they always) but i found i enjoyed it and finished it in 3 days.
The pace of the book is quiet good, and i don't think I got bored in any part.
Well written and I would expect they could get another few books out of this. If so I look forward to listening to them in the future.

Bray does it again!

I liked the film back in the 90s, and I like the book too, but this is my favourite. Been waiting a long time for this to release, and it was totally worth the wait.

A classic but...

I read this a couple of times as a kid before the movie. Liked the movie too. This book is a platform for Heinleins moral philosophy and I do enjoy it even if I don't always agree with it. It's a weird mix of left and right, it's original and derivative at the same time.
The real joy of the story is the power armour and spotting the tropes he started echo in Aliens (is this going to be another bug hunt!). Mobile Infantry are very much like Space Marines, love the bugs too even if the film version worked better (no laser rifles for bugs).
However, a lot of it is slightly dry military procedural with H fleshing out his fantasy army. The end really leaves you wanting more. He could have written a whole series of books but that's not really what H did, he wants to get his ideas over, the story is almost just a vessel.
But this is classic reading list for anyone wanting to understand the roots of modern sci-fi. And mental gymnastics for the moral philosopher.
Great narrator, the wrong one could have killed this story but he did it proud.

Puts the film to shame

Can’t tell you how long I’ve waited for this to come out with RC Bray. Needless to say it’s been worth it

RC Bray was excellent

5 stars as usual for RC Bray. He did a masterful job with the source material. I have a love/hate relationship with classic Sci Fi and I need to consider when this was writtten but it was very dry and full of "I won't go into detail about the thing that would be infinitely more exciting thing than what I just wrote about at length".

I had struggled to get through this book in the past so the audiobook version was helpful in that regard but it felt like a manifesto with a couple of poorly detailed battles thrown in.
