About this listen
Delve into the world of fourteenth-century England in this thrilling historical mystery, the fifteenth in the brilliant Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton.
Edmund Harkins has gone missing.
Few in Bampton liked him, knowing him to be a wife-beater and distinctly unsavory character, so when some hungry pigs unearth his corpse from a shallow grave, there is hardly an outpouring of grief.
As bailiff, it is Hugh de Singleton’s duty to bring Edmund’s killer to justice. But where is he to start investigating when almost everyone in the village has a motive? And when everyone is pleased to see the scoundrel dead, who knows how far they might go to help someone get away with murder?
To further complicate Hugh’s life, the Bishop of Exeter has appointed his nephew as Bampton’s new vicar. But as well as an obsession with discovering any heretical views Hugh might hold, he could not be more unpriestly—he not only acts appallingly with Lady Katherine’s maid, but is contributing to the unhealthy atmosphere of suppression and suspicion that has come to pervade the village …
Fast paced and full of twists and turns, Suppression and Suspicion is a brilliant medieval murder mystery perfect for fans of Susanna Gregory and Peter Ellis. Mel Starr paints an immersive and atmospheric picture of fourteenth-century England, and weaves a compelling mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page.
The fifteenth volume in the Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton, Suppression and Suspicion will be thoroughly enjoyed by long time fans of the series but can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

Better than the last book
This story was better than the last but the ending was unsatisfactory, saved only by a teaser for the next book. There is too much repetition of the basic facts, once we know the son loves to eat we don't need to hear it six times. It's too late I suppose to correct the continuity error that appeared in the last book and also in this one. Long series often deteriorate once there has been more than a dozen books and this series is no exception. For all of that it was an easy listen whilst doing chores.

What next?
Wonderful series, but alas no more Mel Starr stories on Audible. I feel like I shall really miss these medieval mystery stories 😭

Not worth a listen
Disappointed again. Frustrating story with poor outcomes and although the moral questions are approached the decisions are at best weak and at worst unrealistic.
Like many other reviewers there are too many inconsistencies and repetitions to make the series worth pursuing.
Narrator lurched from brisk to almost drawling. Think it’s time for me to move on.

disappointed
This and the previous book fell way short of the usually excellent Singleton series. Much repetition, not much going on, deflated endings.

Excellent as always!
I have listened to all the previous books in the series. Excellent story as always! I like Hugh's dry wit!

Another disappointment.
As with the previous novel I found this one to feel rushed and in need of a good editor. There was a lot of repetition with new characters and storylines that just went nowhere. Once again Arthur’s widow is called Cecily even though she died of plague in book 5 or 6 and Arthur had remarried a woman called Agnes. Also, I believe that Kate’s mother died in childbirth together with the child but here she has died of plague.

Another hugely enjoyable story
This is a great series if you want an easy listening story with familiar characters and plot lines. Personally I can’t wait for the next instalment

Suppression and Suspicion
I like the ethical questions which arose in this plot. In particular I like the way that Micah’s words resolved the issues. However there is much repetition in these books and this one was rather short. So I did not feel I was getting my money’s worth. There could have been development of some other side plot or other characters. I hope the next book where he mends a priest’s fractured skull is better.

Not one of the better books
Think it has been said before but a lot of facts just get repeated. I think we hear more about eating than the crime or solving it. Hopefully the next book spends more time solving the crime than talking about loaves of bread. The ending is also odd.
