About this listen

Vinnie has always been different. But Vinnie is a survivor....

A childhood accident robbed Vinnie of his memories, making him sensitive and anxious, and his difference soon attracted bullies. If it wasn’t for his family and his brother, Frank, Vinnie wouldn’t have survived.

But as the boys grow up, and after the devastating loss of their parents, Vinnie finds himself increasingly involved in violent situations whenever he’s with Frank. Is this the type of man he’s become, or can the love of a remarkable woman teach him to embrace life?

When Vinnie is accused of a terrible crime and looks set for a long stretch behind bars, fragments of his memory start to return and he begins to unravel his past.

Who was his mother? What kind of a man is his brother, Frank? And why does death surround them?

Things are not as they seem, but Vinnie can survive anything....

Ross Greenwood is back with this shocking, thrilling glimpse into the criminal underworld.

Critic reviews

"Move over Rebus and Morse; a new entry has joined the list of great crime investigators in the form of Detective Inspector John Barton. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist." (Richard Burke)

"Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour." (Kath Middleton)

Really good listen.

I really enjoyed the way the story was linked by age and time. I have worked as part of a mental health team in a youth training establishment and recognise the situations described. This will help open people’s eyes and minds.

You can never tell which way he is taking you in the story. Usually with an unexpected ending.

Characters and clever writing

Ross Greenwood’s characters are obviously defined a little from his previous employment as a prison officer and life. They are complex and believable, Well worth a read or a listen

Empathetic

The telling of the story in the first person enables the listener to be drawn in. With subtle changes affecting the protagonist we learn his history, often finding a paradox in the behaviour of the (anti???)hero. The plot is so very well thought out; each twist and turn takes one to places in our own psyche which are familiar, but also at the same time an anathema. Very clever, but the whole construct is a book that is unmissable. This is by far, the best of any novel he has written already. The book is simply fantastic.

Amazing

I thought I was reading a crime fiction book (my normal genre). When the crime & detective wasn’t revealed I was confused! The narrator has an easy voice so I continued to listen. I enjoyed every bit of it. The secrets, little twists. Very thought provoking. A good book club book as it will promote discussion

Brilliant

This kept my interest all the way through. There's a little humour and a lot of sadness and regrets. the narration is spot on.

Well written but not enjoyable

I can’t recommend this book to anyone who has had contact with sex offenders, or anyone who want a ‘feel good’ listen. B
