About this listen
The sweeping epic novel of the founding of Hong Kong, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell
“There can only be one Tai-Pan.”
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming. War between England and China might be over, but the hostilities remain. Struan and Brock come to control much of England’s trade with China yet neither can control their desires or their hatred of each other. Over the years, their two families will cross paths, threatening to rip both apart, with reverberations that will echo across the generations.
Struan must fight to save his company and his family, or risk seeing everything he has created destroyed at the hands of his sworn enemy. Ambition, political intrigue, and love and lust weave their way throughout the novel the New York Times called, “grand entertainment…packed with action…with blood and sin, treachery and conspiracy, sex and murder.” East and West come together in an opulent and intricately plotted narrative. A tour-de-force of historical fiction, rich in detail yet eminently readable, Tai-Pan will stay with you long after the final moment.

by god
a masterpiece, better than shogun of which over 40yrs I read watched on tv and have listened to since joining audible nearly 3 yrs ago. the intenseness passion history violence are exquisite, the reading masterful, and the final tumultuous chapters reached such emotion inside I cried. to look upon this island city now and imagine it's once frail beginning will haunt me each time I see her or hear of her.

Brilliant
Read it many times and seen the awful film adaptation. The book is an incredible read. This audio version is just as good and will be listening again.

This truly is a modern classic
I listened to Shogun and once finished immediately moved on to Tai-Pan in full expectation that it would be impossible to rival such an incredible novel. Whilst I may have been proved partially correct, Tai-Pan is still an amazing story along with some of the most detailed and intricate characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing in any fiction.
Dirk Struan, the Tai-Pan is an utterly extraordinary character, brought to life and beyond by Clavell. Along with Brock, Mai-Mai, Quance, Orlov, Cullum and a whole myriad of other colourful and intricate characters, the detail in which the author describes the founding of Hong-Kong is a joy to behold.
Narrated brilliantly by Gildart Jackson who enhances the experience with his wide variety of the many accents required throughout the book. I have read a few other reviews questioning his Chinese accents that after experiencing over 30 hours of this epic I can only describe as being astonishingly hyper-critical.
It’s not Shogun but it is a masterpiece in its own right.

Oh wow!
First the narration - top top stuff. This guy is the real deal. Probably the best narration I’ve heard from many books. The range of voices is something else. Can’t fault it.
Story - it takes maybe 5 hours to get going, I listened to it right after Shogun and there are some early parallels - but once it gets into its stride, I think overall this might be the better story. It’s faster paced, and the Tai Pan is… possibly a more compelling character than Blackthorne. It doesn’t have that ‘voyage of discovery’ element that Shogun nailed so well, but the other elements are probably done better here. Swings and roundabouts, they’re both great books. This story is more condensed and the narration here really lifts it. On to Noble House!
