Although this novel was really difficult to get into and I had to rewind it a few times, I'm glad that I persevered. It was really long listen though.

The narrator, John Telfer, was excellent and managed a range of accents with consummate ease.

So eager to follow the outcome I even carried my audible player around with me. Desperate for the ending and epilogue, now am still stunned a few days later. Oh my goodness! Sorry, lost a star!

I was doubtful about this book at the beginning, not being an enthusiast for historical novels, but it quickly gripped me. The story is well structured and engaging and the narration excellent. Highly recommended.

There is much to commend this story, well written, well plotted, easy to read usually, though it is occasionally demanding on the reader's emotions. .

Rewarding story from a skilled writer

At first I found the over-writing intensely irritating. Robert Goddard uses 50 words when five would do, and crams every sentence with extra phrases to emphasise the drama.

And yet, after the first hour or so, I let the words wrap around me and I settled into his style. The narrator was excellent and I warmed to the whole thing.

I don't think I would read it again, but it was a highly enjoyable experience and it was worth the long wait for the truth and the final shock.
