What antique would you kill for?
Freya, it’s down to you to finish what I started. . .

Freya Lockwood has avoided the quaint English village in which she grew up for the last 20 years. That is until news arrives that Arthur Crockleford, antiques dealer and Freya’s estranged mentor, has died… and the circumstances seem suspicious.

You will uncover an invitation, I implore you to attend. . .

But when a letter from Arthur is delivered, sent just days before his death, and an ordinary pine chest concealing Arthur’s journals are revealed, Freya finds herself sucked back into a life she’d sworn to leave behind.

But beware, trust no-one. Your life depends on it. . .

Joining forces with her eccentric Aunt Carole, Arthur’s staunch best friend, Freya follows both clues and her instincts to an old manor house for an ‘antiques enthusiasts weekend’. But not is all as it seems; the antiques are bad reproductions and the guests all have something to hide.

Can Freya and Carole solve the mystery and unearth the killer before they strike again?

Took far too long long to get into the story and a little laboured, however, good narration by Emilia Fox

Disappointing

I listen to a huge amount of audio books. Probably it was a disservice to this that I had just listened to something exceptional. And in the comparison this felt slow, and obvious and emotional and I didn’t mind if I wasn’t listening too hard when the story skipped on. In the end the story did have more of a twist than I gave it credit for but, I didn’t really care. I thought the narration was off, listening to Emilia Foz in the interview afterwards I could hear the character much more and she needed some of this lightest in her main narration. I was expecting a lot as it was presented to me by audible as a possible best seller so maybe my expectations were set too high. I feel bad being negative about it but it just wasn’t, gripping.

It didn’t grab me

Crime with a difference

After everything was solved it went on too long felt a bit like somebody trying to get up to a word count. Other than that I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.

I loved the antique side of the story

I thought the story was original and engaging, brilliantly narrated bringing the characters to life.
The flow and pace of the story were spot on, with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged through out, an easy and interesting listen, looking forward to the next one!

Beautifully read by Emilia Fox, who really brought the characters to life. A great combination of classic murder mystery, antiques crime and likeable, believable characters. Good story with emotion and no waffle.

Can’t wait for the next one

On the whole I enjoyed this book but every so often I wanted to shake Freya and tell her to grow up and stop whining about Cairo and her house & ex. I was so pleased when we found out what had happened there but just wished it was earlier. I loved Carol and think I shall listen to the next one!

Sometimes wanted to shake her

Authors are skilled people and they should not try and be everyone else because by being ‘normal’ you take away the magic of being a writer to your listeners

I don’t think knowing that the authors Mum suggested the antiques road show before I started the book was necessary or nice

Loved the story. As a fan of crime fiction and antiques, this was wonderful. Brilliantly read by Emilia Fox; I so hope she reads the next one.
