About this listen

When a book signing turns deadly, two bookshop owners turn detectives.

Gemma loves the quiet life of her bookshop, the Bookworm—a haven for book lovers in a quaint town in the heart of Derbyshire. But everything changes when Gemma discovers the body of local author Dominic Westley during the shop’s latest book signing event.

When the police rule the death as an accidental overdose, Dominic’s estranged widow points the finger at one of his past lovers. Gemma and her trusty assistant, Mavis, won’t rest until they uncover the truth. Was it an accidental overdose or something more sinister?

Fans of cozy mysteries will delight in The Bookshop Mysteries - A Bitter Pill, a charming and suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you enjoyed books like The Thursday Murder Club or The Missing Maid, then this is the perfect book for you to curl up with.

I liked the story and the book shop setting, which is lovely. I loved the details about life running an independent book shops with a cafe, sounds idyllic. I found some of the writing a little cliched though, not sure there were enough clues in the story to enable readers to guess the outcome. Will read more in the series because I am getting interested in the characters and I really like the setting.

Nice story based in a beautiful part of the country near to where I’m from

There are so many ‘cosy murder mysteries’ on the shelves at the moment, buyers are spoilt for choice. Disappointingly this is not one I’ll recommend although I liked the bookshop angle. The writing was very cliched, descriptions unoriginal and every time I heard ‘my dear’ I wanted to throw my phone against the wall. Poor Mavis, just because she’s a pensioner doesn’t mean she has to be saddled with that affectation. I guessed the murderer very early on which was also frustrating. Not helped by the reader’s saccharine voice and flat intonation.

Ok plot but annoying narrator

Really quite unbearable narrator, no tonal change with characters. Made the story so dull. Really surprised at how much it affected the story.

Terrible narrator
