About this listen

Ever so wholesome. Ever so deadly....

When a local man is found murdered in an English Trust stately home, the community is shaken to its core. None more so than newcomer Astrid Swift, who finds the body. When she moved from London to the sleepy Dorset village and got a job at the house as an art restorer, she thought she was heading for a quieter life. Far from it. Because it turns out that rather than being the genteel organisation it seems on the surface, the Trust is a hotbed of politics and intrigue. As Astrid's new friend Kath from the village says: 'It's like the mafia, but with scones.'

As the suspicious deaths mount up and the threat draws closer, Astrid must use every gadget in her restorer's toolkit to solve the mystery, save her reputation—and maybe even her life. Thrilling, funny and addictive, The Trust is perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Robert Thorogood and Clare Chase.

Too many holes in the plot

This is a “murder mystery lite” book. There were so many holes in the plot that I never did understand why the victim was murdered. It’s a shame because it had the beginnings of quite an interesting story. Then it turned into a bit of a Mills & Boon romance. So many of the characters’ motives and actions were simply unbelievable, and I got fed up with the main character’s ego. I’m glad I got it from the Plus catalogue. On the other hand, the narrator was excellent, which is why it got an extra star!

Good choice for fans of cosy crime

This has a likeable lead character and the story jogs along nicely. It's ideal cosy crime. Well read by Ruth Redman. I enjoyed it enough to download and listen to the second book. There was a third book, but when I came back to purchase it, it had mysteriously disappeared. A case for our heroine to investigate, perhaps?

Wonderful characters within the story

This is a very light holiday story wonderfully read by Ruth Redman. She manages to get wonderful characters full of fun and emotion and very alive . Very entertaining .

Charming.

Astrid gets dumped, moves to Dorset and learns lots of life lessons. She is an unlikeable snob at the start, but like any good cosy crime book the secondary characters do a lot of the work in creating the charm and warmth in the story, and help Astrid to flourish, see the emptiness of her former life - and of course solve the mystery!!

Brilliant rendition of characters.

A fabulous romp through middle England! The characters were expertly and deftly realised by reader Ruth Redman. She made it very easy to picture each one of them. It was read with verve and gusto, and was a brilliant listen on a number of long car journeys; some wonderful laugh out loud moments between characters. If I had a niggle, I would say the book often gets carried away on a bit too much description of details that aren't important.

A mixed bag

This one was a mixed bag for me. The arrogance of Astrid was so angering sometimes, yet I couldn't help feeling for her and rooting for her. The art conservation aspects were very interesting, which gave this book a different spin. If there's another adventure for Astrid I just might give it a go.
