About this listen

Benny is so nice they feel compelled to destroy him, but he has a friend who should scare the hell out of them in this breathtaking new kind of thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz.

Benny Catspaw’s perpetually sunny disposition is tested when he loses his job, his reputation, his fiancée, and his favorite chair. He’s not paranoid. Someone is out to get him. He just doesn’t know who or why. Then Benny receives an inheritance from an uncle he’s never heard of: a giant crate and a video message. All will be well in time.

How strange—though it’s a blessing, his uncle promises. Stranger yet is what’s inside the crate. He’s a seven-foot-tall self-described “bad weather friend” named Spike whose mission is to help people who are just too good for this world. Spike will take care of it. He’ll find Benny’s enemies. He’ll deal with them. This might be satisfying if Spike wasn’t such a menacing presence with terrifying techniques of intimidation.

In the company of Spike and a fascinated young waitress-cum-PI-in-training named Harper, Benny plunges into a perilous high-speed adventure, the likes of which never would have crossed the mind of a decent guy like him.

Critic reviews

“Ray Chase performs an unusual story of good versus evil centered on the nicest man in the world.… Chase's portrayal suits the jaunty character well, shifting between humorous and ominous to great effect. Even during dramatic violence Chase's depictions keep the story engrossing. Often Koontz breaks the fourth wall, but Chase never breaks character. With a performance that careens from funny to horrifying and back again, Benny's story is engaging and a wonderful deviation from Koontz's usual style.”AudioFile Magazine

A great book well read

Koontz is a descriptive magician. He transports you into the world of the characters. This was such a good concept with just the right amount of quirkiness, excitement and wonder. I like that further stories can follow on from this should he choose.
The performance was exceptional. I personally normally favour a ‘Stephen Fry’ style voice. However, this performance was perfectly executed. The characters voices were both humorous and appropriate matched. I thoroughly enjoyed listening.

Good concepts but doesn’t really go anywhere

I liked the characters and themes but found the story progression disappointing- perhaps if there are more books in a series it will be worth another listen

So Much Fun

Excellent story. So much fun and weirdness. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I only wish we learned more about the friends from school. But it didn't take away from the fact that this is very funny in parts, very creepy in others, and definitely weird and wonderful.

Suspend expectations

Reminiscent of odd Thomas but kookier if that’s possible. Very entertaining and fun but not a usual suspense story. This book is just long enough, any longer and it would be tedious, basically kept with it for the quirky humour, but would understand if people were disappointed in it

Weirdly Brilliant

I’d been waiting for another comedy from Dean Koontz. He does dark supernatural suspense. with clever humour, brilliantly. I appreciated the selfishness of the former psychologist who took care of Benny as a teen. She was tired of what she was tired of, so took on an easier way of life. Benny was nice and I felt bad for his past troubles. Harper Harper was a cute soul mate for Benny. Spike the Craggle was a fun dark creation of a supernatural character. All characters herein were so unique.

Outstanding narration

Narrator brought the characters to life, felt like being in the story rather than writing it

Story and Performance

It is the first Dean Koontz book I ever read/listened to. I am really impressed.
Such a natural and honest way of telling the story. The narrator acted the author’s voice well, and was very good at differentiating and giving life to the characters.
