About this listen

They’re used to solving murders. But until now the killer has always been human…

October 1912. The inhabitants of Littleton Cotterell emerge from their homes after a week of torrential storms to the gruesome news that one of Sid Hyde’s prized sheep has been mauled to death. As rumours abound of a vicious beast stalking the Gloucestershire countryside in search of prey, Lady Hardcastle and her fearless lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, set out to find what is surely a rational explanation.

Then Hyde himself is brutally killed in a similar attack, and the villagers go from curious to terrified. Littleton Cotterell isn’t exactly unaccustomed to murderers—but a ferocious animal capable of tearing a man to shreds? That’s entirely different.

When another man dies and a third is injured, it’s clear that whatever is behind the attacks needs to be caught, and fast. But are the villagers really seeing what they think they are? Is there actually a beast on the loose? Or is what’s out there something more sinister—and much more human?

I normally love this series and I can’t wait for the latest book but this was a little disappointing. I don’t want to give too much away but the plot with Sir Hector’s sister didn’t really stack up with her political affiliations. The animals plot was a little too far fetched even for Lady Hardcastle. There has to be a degree of suspension of disbelief but I think he pushed it too far with this story. Lovely performance as always.

Too far fetched

The next in the series does not disappoint, with humorous cozy crime from the author. Wonderful performance from narrator. Overall, top quality all round - as have come to expect!

Have read the full series and I hope there are more Lady Hardcastle mysteries soon narrated by audible.

The story

Great fun once again with Lady H and Flo. They investigate a sudden death after a farmer is attacked by an animal (or is he???). With that and the post being mysteriously re-sorted before it can be delivered, and Daisy and her extremely large 'rat', the intrepid duo are kept rather busy. Oh and they also have to save Gertie from her annoying sister-in-law - not to mention her dog!

Great fun

Another great outing for Lady H and Strongarm.

It was great to see all the different strands of the story neatly tied at the end. Why would have thought that a quokka, a macaw, a panther and a dragon would have so much in common.

It’s always fab to catch up with the regular characters and well as meeting new ones.

I’ll definitely be listening again soon.

Another jaunt in the countryside

Another interesting adventure for Lady Hardcastle and Flo. This series never disappoints, each one is as good as the next. It’s always like meeting up with old friends. The narration is perfect and brings all the characters to life.

Excellent

I’m always so sad when I get to the end, these are such fun to listen to! Narration as always was spot on!
Thanks for bringing these characters in to my life!

Another great story

I love every moment of this series and this latest, long-awaited, book was even funnier than usual! The witty comments, the back & forth between the main protagonists and just the overall - or is it underlying? - humour of the narrative, are an absolute joy. Whilst the actual mystery story wasn’t my favourite of the series, there were numerous moments that made me laugh-out-loud, on top of the top drawer quality of the writing that cause me to listen with a “constant smile” on my face. If it’s greedy of me to hope for another of these glorious books in short order, then consider me a glutton. Thanks, love and appreciation to the author of course and total kudos to the wonderful narrator who makes every character identifiable and believable, while providing perfect characterisations of the main characters; Lady Emily herself and Sir Hector Farley-Stroud are deserving of an extra-special mention, however every character is portrayed perfectly. Utter perfection in story-form.

Bally wonderful, what?
