About this listen

On the Mongolian steppes a general in the People's Liberation Army stakes his career, and his life, on a GPS-free missile guidance system that will change the balance of power on the battlefield. In Bath a young Chinese woman has secured the affections of a young brainiac working on that very problem. In Leamington Spa a deep cover operative has given himself away. And in London Jonas Merrick watches all, assessing, planning. A moment, perhaps, for him to strike a blow to China's espionage network in the UK. One thing he does not see, however, is in Moscow. An order given: 'bring me his head'. Tautly plotted and frighteningly authentic The Best Revenge cements Jonas Merrick as one of the great figures of modern spy fiction.

I think this is one of the best books I have listened to on Audible. The characterisation’s and story line are excellent. The way the character Jonas is treated is completely consistent will the civil services generally where those who actually strive to achieve are the most pilloried, the author captures this in spades

Such a great story and excellent narration

Fiction? You be the judge. Seymour at his best again. Good ol' Jonas strikes again. Never in doubt?

Wonderful and thought provoking

As always from Geral Seymour a densely convoluted plot, wholly credible characters, and a genuinely hard- to-put-down nail biter of a novel. Five stars well deserved.

A deeply written thoughtful novel.

Wow! Look at what is happening in the world right now. Drug dealer in France being broken out of a prison escort, three suspected individuals arrested on suspicion of spying for Hong Kong (read China!). You couldn’t make it up! Does GS have a crystal ball? Wonderful narrative, brilliant storytelling and superb narration. Thoroughly recommend.

Prescient subject matter

Gripping from start to finish. Stressed because I need to find another book to listen to now. Gerald Seymour’s books are always hard to follow. He is probably the best writer out there.

The ability to create tension from the beginning to the end

What an excellent paced novel. Its steady ratcheting up of tension, detail and plausibility made for a gripping listen. The performance was superb. I was truly hooked.

The narrator is perfect for these stories. He is an excellent fit for the Jonas Merrick series with an intonation that brings to mind the character of Jonas from the very start The story is well crafted and progresses as usual in its steady and satisfying pace

Another enjoyable Jonas Merrick story
