About this listen

As the clouds of war gather over Cavendon Hall, the next generation must step forward…

The great house of Cavendon Hall has stood on the Yorkshire moors for centuries. Two families, the aristocratic Inghams and the Swanns who serve them, have been bound by loyalty since the first stone was laid.

But when war looms, sons, husbands and brothers are called up to fight; trials and tragedies strike the great house itself. The women of every generation and background must rise to meet the terrible threat posed by Hitler.

The Cavendon Luck has held for a long time. Can it hold in the face of this greatest threat of all – and can it protect the next generation?

Critic reviews

‘The four young women centre stage are a feistier lot than their Downton counterparts…These are likeable, well-drawn characters whose fortunes you follow with keen interest…neatly captures the brittleness of the decade that danced and stumbled towards the Great Depression.’ Daily Mail

‘Sweeping, fascinating and dramatic… there’s even a nod to Emma Harte. The power and emotion come through on every page’ Romantic Times Book Reviews

Acclaim for Cavendon Hall:
‘A classic saga of loyalty, secrets, passion and intrigue…if you’ve been suffering withdrawal symptoms from Downton, this is for you’ Daily Mail

‘A stately home, a dangerous secret and two families whose fates have been intertwined for generations…a gripping period piece set on the brink of the Great War. Exquisite escapism of the highest order.’ The Lady

‘A glorious family saga for Downton Abbey fans…This is Barbara Taylor Bradford in her element, full of drama, passion, romance and danger.’ Sarah Broadhurst, lovereading.co.uk

A great read. A definite must

I was quite dubious about reading this being a youngster (ish). It was recommended by my mum. I am so glad I did. Brilliant - all the series. Definitely worth reading

Fantastic Storytelling of Wonderfully Written Books

Anna Bentinck is one of the best story tellers on Audible. The way she tells the stories, the accents, whether they are male or female, puts you right in the picture and you have the people there in your imagination. I absolutely adore her and look to see if she is telling the story before I purchase.

I love BTB

I enjoyed this story which is gentle not exciting. Typical BT, love the family history and details. Describes the war situation so well too. Difficult to comprehend haw awful things were in Germany. Looking forward to her next saga. Well researched too

Another great book

I actually found this the best book of all the first three and think the one and two star comments listed to be very negative.

I don’t know what people expect when a book is about a saga for a short period of time and complex characters, but to me, BTB really did them justice and it was a page turner at times.

It is a gentle book in many ways, but that is only to be expected if readers are au-fait with her work.

If people want highly charged modern books, this is not for them. We are going back nearly 100 years ago and times were different and to me, she has it spot on.

Outstanding saga

It’s was most truly outstanding audio books I’ve listened too.
I’ve laughed and cried, the author has written this beautifully and the performance was also outstanding on each books, each characters were brought to life.
I recommend the 3 books/Audios to everyone to read and listen too.
I’m sad it has ended..
Thank you. 10/10

The characters were interesting and it was linked to previous books with Emma Hart.

I find the voices the reader uses a bit annoying and distracting if it wasn't for the interesting story line I would of stopped listening.

Dear god where to start...

I wanted this because her other books are so bad I thought I'd have a laugh at some lazy writing but...my god this is truly something else. Go for it if you want a giggle at an appallingly inept author but beware - you will be bored, confused, and very very offended. No one this racist, nationalist and plain useless at writing should be allowed to comment on the holocaust. It is basically 15 hours of worshipping her own characters and bemoaning their occasional "bad luck" when they actually live in a mansion and continue to feast, untouched by war, and then about two minutes detailing the genocide. Wish I could get back the time I wasted listening to this! It's tragic to think of all the talented people struggling to get published when stuff like THIS is allowed to see the light of day.

Disappointing - minor plot spoiler alert

This a most frustrating listen. I had enjoyed the first two books but this volume lacked any tension and was disappointing. Plot lines pop up and are resolved so quickly and predictably that the whole book is flat. One example - our heroine is helping the escape of a Jewish family from Nazi Berlin. Pages are spent on this but when eventually resolved it is so unsatisfactory. You are not even sure if they are ever reunited as not a word is written about it and the family disappear down a plot hole. And finally the author hasn't even bothered with basic research about WW2 eg British Intelligence talk of concentration camps with gas chambers six years before they existed. So if you want to know what happens to the two families this is ok but prepare to feel uninvolved
