About this listen

The most chilling read of the Christmas season.

As the snow begins to fall, the body count begins to climb…

DI James Walker is ready for a quiet family Christmas in the sleepy village of Kirkby Abbey.

But when he opens an early Christmas present left on his doorstep, he soon realises it is no gift. Inside is a gruesome surprise, and a promise – twelve days, twelve murders. Not long after, the first body is found, half frozen in the snow.

As the blizzards descend, panic spreads through the remote Cumbrian village – there’s a killer amongst them, and with eleven more victims to go, anyone could be next….

Can James stop the killer before they strike again?

The first in a new series, Alex Pine has written a dark, atmospheric crime novel, set in a snowed-in Cumbrian village, for fans of Val McDermid, Ross Greenwood and LJ Ross.

Fantastic book. A little slow in places, but kept me guessing until the last few minutes.

Kept me guessing all the way through

ok the setting was great, but Annie who is a seasoned detectives wife is a histrionic.. also I'd worked out who the killer was after the 3rd chapter.. when the detective was so slow on the uptake even after seeing written proof I was rolling my eyes and laughing.

quaint mystery

The Christmas killer is amazing, the word said is used a lot but overall I like the story and listened with interest trying to discover the murder as it went. I particularly like the chapters where it was written by the victims view. I will definitely be willing to hear of other books from Alex Pine. Neet Mohan does read fast but when you get used to the speed he is clear and understandable. The characters all did sound the same but with time I believe this is an area that will improve.

My View

I did enjoy this book and it turned out exactly how I had guessed. The story was good, albeit a little predictable.
The narration took a while to accept as I am used to narrators adopting different tones for the different characters. I think this did eventually happen as the book went on but to my recollection the earlier parts of the book sounded like one 'voice' so I found it a little hard to differentiate the characters.
An enjoyable alternative Christmas listen for me though as I was growing tired of the fluffy romance.

A little predictable but a good listen

The story was ok but the narrator let the book down. it can make a big difference who is reading the books.

the narrator, made me skeepy

Sorry. The story was good, but there was a terrible overuse of “hun”. Some might it see it as a term of endearment, but far better to use someone name now and again! I felt that the narrator sounded too young.

Poor narration.
