About this listen
In The Demon Awakens, best-selling author R. A. Salvatore creates an astonishing new world for listeners to explore - and an intrepid hero to lead the way: Elbryan Wynden, who must confront the dark tides of destiny in his epic search for justice and peace....
A great evil has awakened in the land of Corona, a terrible demon determined to spread death and misery. His goblin armies and fearsome giants ravage the settlements of the frontier, and in the small village of Dundallis their merciless attack leaves behind two shattered orphans: Pony and her lifelong friend, the youth Elbryan. Taken in by elves, Elbryan is raised to become a formidable ranger - a fateful role that will lead him into harrowing confrontation.
Meanwhile, on a far-off island, a shower of gemstones will fall onto the black-sand shores. These heaven-sent stones carry within them an incredible power - the key to all that is good in the world and all that is evil, and it is up to one young monk to liberate them from the corrupt monastery that harvests them. Pray that they don't fall into the wrong clawed hands....

Not bad for a start
No bad for star series but towards the end, I really struggled to finish it

Just brilliant.
Can be enjoyed as a stand alone book. I cannot wait for the next one in the series. Well narrate. Well written and it kept me interested throughout.

Give it a miss
Can't believe this is by the same guy who gave us Drizzt. Found this book dull and for at least the first half it seems to flail for direction and the numerous time skips leave it disjointed. Tried to stick it out but zoned out a bit for the last couple of chapters, which is a shame as by then it had started to pick up pace, but too little to late (I stuck it out because I'd already invested so much time listening to it but overall the story was too much of a drag to bother going back and listening to the two or so chapters I missed).
The only good thing is the narrator, who tries to give it some energy and does a few good voices, but even he is only average really. I wouldn't be adverse to hearing more books he read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to hunt them down. Same can't be said for this series - while I would (and plan to) get audiobooks of the Drizzt books, I have no intention of getting the sequels to this book.

Very Disappointing
What was most disappointing about R. A. Salvatore’s story?
The writing is very poor: thin characters who keep doing the same things that I find I don't really identify with; endless gory fighting scenes that aren't at all scary; implausible narrow escapes; a big demon who seems very easy to defeat.
There are much better derivative Lord of the Rings sort of books out there.
