About this listen

The Eagle's Prey is the thrilling fifth novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. A must-listen for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.

It is late summer AD 44, and the battle-weary Roman legions are in their second year of campaigning against the British tribes. The troops' commander, General Plautius, is under pressure from the emperor to crush the natives once and for all.

Centurions Macro and Cato are with the crack Second Legion under the precarious leadership of Centurion Maximus, and it's their task to hold a ford across the river Tamesis when the natives are forced into a trap. But Maximus' nerve breaks at the critical point, allowing the enemy leader, Caratacus, and his men to escape.

Outraged by this failure, General Plautius orders the decimation of the unit. Their choice: die, or escape to become fugitives pursued by soldiers of their own ruthless army. Hiding from their former comrades as well as the Britons, Cato's small band of fugitives have only one chance to redeem themselves before they are hunted down like animals.

I hadn’t realised that it was possible for this series to get any better? It just did. I loved this continuing chronicle of Cato and Macro. Top marks ... and so on to the next one!

Absolutely brilliant, Cato & Macro have done it again.
Learning about Caratucus was fascinating, I'm only surprised that here in Britain he isn't more immortalised with statues etc.

Wonderful

Another thrilling adventure for Macro and Cato. I couldn’t stop worrying about them when I was not actually listening. I had to get back to get them out of trouble. (As they always do.) I’m totally addicted to these two.

One of the darker stories and all the better for it. Personally love the narrator. Can't wait to move on to the next one

I really enjoyed this book, love the narrator, well worth a listen. Kato has become a more bitter character this time around, his infuriating petulance of the earlier books makes way for cunning and leadership instead. well worth a listen.

fast paced story

For those who are not yet acquainted with this series it is best, perhaps, to give a sense of the focal points of the novels to date. The first is the growing relationship and exploits of experienced Macro and the younger Cato. The second is that battles are related in often gory detail and the language used is often ripe. The third is that there is usually an individual who is a magnet for deceit, scheming, out for no good and usually directly affecting Macro and Cato. The third is that these first five novels give the fictionalised account of the Roman invasion. The fourth is that there is the involvement of known names from history. The fifth is that humour is some description is always present. The sixth is that listeners will learn to appreciate how the Roman army set about things from routines in camp to battle strategy. The author, Simon Scarrow always manages to create novels that are involving page-turners where you care for key characters and quickly set against the no-good characters. The narrative is clear easily possible to follow the story line without getting confused. This novel seems to me to be a pivot point. Cato is far more significant and listeners will see how he grows in stature in surprising ways and despite the challenges and threats against him. To detail the events of the novel is not for here, but what is is to state clearly that the performance of the audiobook is clear, engaging and at appropriate times exciting. Jonathan Keeble mages to increase the pace of his performance without losing touch with his listeners. This adds to the enjoyment of the novel. At the time of this review there are some 23 novels in the series, and I - for one - am committed to following them all.
