About this listen

Hard-core military science fiction at its very best, John Scalzi's The Last Colony is the third in The Old Man's War series.

They must save themselves – or die trying.

John Perry was living peacefully on one of humanity's colonies – until he and his wife were offered an opportunity these ex-supersoldiers couldn't resist. To come out of retirement and lead a new frontier world.

However, once on the planet, they discover they've been betrayed. For this colony is a pawn in an interstellar game of war and diplomacy. Humanity's Colonial Union has pitched itself against a new, seemingly unstoppable alien alliance, dedicated to ending all human colonization.

As this contest rages above, Perry struggles to keep his terrified colonists alive on the surface below – despite dangerous interstellar politics, violence and treachery. And the planet has yet to reveal its own fatal secrets.

Loved it - the first three books of Old Man's War are a great trilogy and this is a fantastic end to the John/Jane story arc.

Epic

Twists and turns, humour, drama and the unimaginable expanse of space.
Written with imagination and skill. You can't ask for more in a book.

Another Gem

Another great instalment to the series. It reads well as a standalone book. Though of course if slots into the ongoing saga of a fascinating future. Thoroughly recommend this whole series! Well read. Great voice changes. And interesting ideas and portrayals of human nature.

Excellent continuation of a superb story arc!

I loved Old Man's War, but I didn't feel Ghost Brigades hit the same high notes. I enjoy it, but I felt it was a slightly inferior effort. I do however, love The Last Colony. Worth a listen!

A fantastic follow up

Great story, gripping from start to finish. Engaging characters presented so well that I feel I've met them, but I expect that from Scalzi. My first book read by Dufris, but it won't be my last, because he is BRILLIANT. All in all, one of my favourite audiobooks ever, and I've listened to hundreds.

Brilliant all round.

Political intrigue, interesting characters, surprising battles, this book has exactly what you want.
Even though the premise of the story seems to point to a boring story, especially after the previous books, the twists of the story deliver a surprisingly captivating story.

Good story but even better world expansion

the performance is as good as the rest of them, really talented reader. the story didn't quite grab me the way the earlier books did but it's still good

a very noteworthy book in the series

I enjoyed the book and I am very happy to recommend the set. There was a section I didn’t like but that is more about my preferences not on the writing or narration which was outstanding. If this was the first in the series I would not have read the rest. I think it might be generous giving it 4 🌟 for the story.

Overall pretty good

Same great narration, same engaging characters and a less action-packed story of a more political slant but one that is still thrilling.

Another great chapter in the series

a little dull in places as it covers day to day stuff with occasional action
