Summary

Neve Connolly looks down at a murdered man.

She doesn't call the police.

‘You know, it’s funny,’ Detective Inspector Hitching said. ‘Whoever I see, they keep saying, talk to Neve Connolly, she’ll know. She’s the one people talk to, she’s the one people confide in.’

A trusted colleague and friend. A mother. A wife. Neve Connolly is all these things.

She has also made mistakes: some small, some unconsciously done, some large, some deliberate. She is only human, after all. But now one mistake is spiralling out of control, and Neve is bringing those around her into immense danger. She can’t tell the truth. So how far is she prepared to go to protect those she loves? And who does she really know?

And who can she trust?

A liar. A cheat. A threat.

Neve Connolly is all these things.

Could she be a murderer?

Critic reviews

“'The hook of The Lying Room is chilling: a woman discovers the dead body of a man she knows and doesn’t tell a soul...Nicci French remains one step ahead of us as we race to unpick Neve Connolly's deadly tangle. Expertly paced, psychologically sharp, thoroughly enjoyable." (Louise Candlish)

Slow down the narration, otherwise a great listen

I enjoyed this book whilst in lockdown at home. The narrator does speak very, very fast, however I slowed the speed of the narration down to 90% on my listening device and it was just right. I do prefer these stand alone stories from Nicci French rather than the Frieda Klein ones. This one kept me guessing.

LOVED IT

I’ve had so many disappointing books lately. This was great. Couldn’t stop listening. Flowed really well. So many different potential outcomes. Great book. Would definitely recommend!

Total waste of time

Ludicrous plot - all cardboard characters. Nicci French is usually so good so rather a shame.

Good story - but you will need to slow the speed

Story was good, a little drawn out and lots of similes (more than needed , in my opinion ).
But it was quite an enjoyable listen.
Narrator has a lovely voice, but read the story way to fast, had to adjust the speed a couple of times to slow it down. Attempts to distinguish voices didn’t work as well as planned.
The ending seemed to have been plucked from nowhere - as in, with all the character building it seemed strange

Worth a listen

Fabulously gripping. A great twisty Turner.

Really enjoyed this book. Gentle yet exciting, the narrator carrys the story well. enough who done it intrigue to carry you along.

Hard work

It took so long to get to the point that I would think of it as a psychological novel . not at all as I had expected.

Slow it down to .90

This book was ok, but wasn’t one of Nicci French’s best. No particularly likeable characters and plodding or overly padded out in places. Nicci’s novels usually zip along, so this was a bit disappointing. I almost gave up at chapter 2 because of the narration, I wonder if this is a technical problem with the recording, or if the narrator was worried she’d left her hair straighteners on at home! I’ve sped up lots of books but never had to slow one down before, listening to it at .90 speed sorts the problem out though, which makes me think this wasn’t the fault of the reader.

Interesting storyline

Enjoyable story with a few twists. Narrator was ok, though did gabble quite a bit, and constantly sounded in a rush to get the story over with.
