About this listen

A thrilling new crime series by the best-selling author of Death and Croissants

A Killer. A Saint. A Town Full of Whispers

When an English expat is brutally murdered, his charred corpse left on a Loire Valley hillside, the police turn to juge d’instruction Matthieu Lombard to find the perpetrator.

Instead, Lombard discovers a wealth of secrets, grudges, and feuds in the idyllic town of Saint-Genèse-sur-Loire. He begins to suspect that the remaining members of the Comité des Fêtes know more about the death than they are letting on.

But rather than leading to an arrest, each clue he uncovers seems to point in one, unexpected direction: Joan of Arc. Is the answer to the murder hiding in the barroom gossip of the Lion d’Or? Or in another century altogether?

The thrilling new crime series from The Times-bestselling author of Death and Croissants.

For a change when reading a murder mystery I had no inkling who did it!

Ian Moore has now become my favourite author! He is such a versatile writer …

I have read and/or listened to all his Folley Valley Mystery books, which I love and are completely and hilariously different to The Man who Didn’t Burn.

I’m so glad Ian Moore is saving himself to only reading the Folley Valley books himself (on Audible) as he makes them even more entertaining with his narration.

It don’t think it would be the same (for me) if he narrated a more serious novel.

The Man who didn’t Burn had me captivated from the moment I started listening to John Sackville who has a very lovely voice.

John’s narration felt immediately right as the voice for Juge Lombard. (I hope he narrates all the books in the series)
I have already bought Book 2 - Dead Behind the Eyes - and look forward to listening to more about the cases and private life of Juge Lombard

Well done Ian … and please don’t forget to write more in the Folley Valley series; along, of course, with more of your Juge Lombard character … just don’t mix them up as heaven knows what Richard would do 🤣

Absolutely cracking book!

As with Death and Croissants, and the rest of the series, you have to pay attention. An entertaining story with interesting characters and a intriguing plot that develops and the body count increases. In this instance, however, there isn't an intricate plot which leaves you perplexed, but rather a final guilty party who appears (to me anyway) entirely out if the blue. Still very enjoyable and worth a listen.

Very entertaining

An interesting premise, setting a murder mystery in France where the police investigation proceeds quite differently from the familiar practice in the UK and US. A pity that the author failed to acknowledge the parallels with the system in Scotland.
An interesting set of crimes, with a decent cast of characters and a good location, and a nice resolution. Excellent work by the narrator, barring a mispronunciation of the English name "St John" as "Saint John" rather than the normal "Sinjen" (made into a joke by Rowan Atkinson's priest character in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral").
The tension between the police and the magistrate is perfectly plausible, especially given the latter's preference for active involvement in the investigation.

Minor niggles...A couple of places where the author appears to have forgotten the characters in his book were talking in French, as they made a play on words which may only work in English. Not entirely convinced by Juge Lombard's long-standing angst about his late wife, given that the French are known to typically have a relaxed attitude about it.

An engaging crime mystery

A darker character in the Judge, but really enjoyed his storytelling. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Have enjoyed all Ian's books and this was excellent. Looking forward to more of these stories.

Not a comedy but just as good

A strong, enjoyably twisty plot, beautifully written with well-rounded, believable characters.

Very different from Moore's "Death&Croissants" series, which I also love. This has less levity and more shadow, but the shadows are very much worth exploring.

The audio is well done. Fits the mood and pace of the book.

Would recommend.

visited the area described in the story so this added another lever. I enjoy French police/detective stories full stop.

This book was a bit like Midsomer Murders set in France; too many characters muddled the plot, made it difficult to follow. Basically it was a good story but it didn’t quite work for me.

Not a fan
