Sometimes at the darkest hour, hope shines the brightest....
When Col's childhood imaginary friends come to life, he discovers a world where myths and legends are real. Accompanied by his guardians - a six-foot tiger, a badger in a waistcoat and a miniature knight - Col must race to Blitz-bombed London to save his sister.
But there are darker forces at work, even more than the Nazi bombings. Soon Col is pursued by the terrifying Midwinter King, who is determined to bring an eternal darkness down over everything.

A must read
Loved this story!!
It's a great adventure with a lovely message about friendship and over coming fear. The last 10 chapters I couldn't stop listening. I would fully recommend this story for both adults and children 8+.

a beautifully captivating tale that brings history to life. the narrator does a fantastic job.
Wonderfully narrated. Such a beautiful, child-friendly way of connecting to the events of WW2 and seasonal changes. loveable characters.

One of our favourites
The overall themes with the fantasy characters and the links to the war. It bursts with description bei ginger the characters to life. We loved that the badger wore a waistcoat.

It’s a great story building in historical events
I came across this whilst searching for other books narrated by the incomparable Joe Jameson. At some point I realised it’s for a much younger audience than my *makes indistinguishable noise* years
Cemented firmly when the end of the book suggests I go speak to my teachers on the historical events…
I mean the front cover clearly indicates it’s for that younger audience but it was late, I needed a new story… it happens
Still I did enjoy it a lot and whilst i probably won’t recommend it to my best friend, for kids around the 8-12 mark, get involved!
To note I could probably listen to a historical story on vacuum cleaners with Joe Jameson narrating…

Everything and More...
Ok... there’s a lot to process here...
World War II evacuee, the Holocaust, the fight of the Jews in 1930s Germany, kindertransport, the blitz, family torn apart by war and tragedy... oh, and UK mythology and magic... so yeah... kind of a lot to take in, and yet Ross has created a superb cast of characters that seem to live out 2 or 3 stories in one... honestly - this, is a flipping good book!

Now one of my favs !
Wow! What an amazing book! Great characters , writing and amazing story. I cried , laughed and honestly loved every chapter. I can see why it won an award! So amazing ! I’ll be buying in book form as I loved it that much!
