About this listen

The gripping new Audible Original from queen of suspense K. L. Slater.

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers.

My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well.

So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia.

But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

There’s something hidden in the pages of this book, I’m sure of it. Some clue to Philippa’s disappearance. And I don’t feel safe. I’m being watched. My room has been searched. Saskia has been calling me in tears. If I don’t find answers fast I’ll lose more than my second chance.

I’ll lose my daughter.

A breath-taking new thriller from the number one author of The Marriage and The Widow. If you like Gone Girl, The Girl on The Train and The Wife Between Us then you will love The Narrator.

...with women as the main characters.
Really well written, plenty of twists that I didn't see coming. I listened to the whole book in two days.
We hear about the home and work-life of Eve Hewitt, a professional audio book narrator. In her personal life she is divorced from the rather controlling Hugo who starts to have ambitions to start sharing custody of their 5 yo daughter Scarlett.
The central plot revolves around Philippa Roberts, a successful author who has gone missing, but leaves behind the manuscript of her final book which may hold clues as to what has happened to her.
The characters are really well crafted by K L Slater. As listeners, we feel for what they are going through.

Ironically I found the narration really difficult, more particularly, that of Eve, the narrator! For me a good audiobook requires neither the story nor the narration to usurp the other but should blend seamlessly.

I found Eve too breathy in her speech and while I realise she’d been through difficult things, she was too insipid. This made it difficult to have any interest in the narrative.

Beautifully narrated. Amazing storyline. Full of twists and turns that hold you captured. The enthusiastic overbearing star fan really is the star of the show

Love KL Slater’s work & this doesn’t disappoint. Gripping til the final plot twist which I didn’t see coming at all. Renewed my Audible subscription just to listen to it & binged it in 2 days. Narrators bring the story to life. Really enjoyed it 😊

Great story with plot twist

I loved this book - the narration was very pleasant and entertaining and the plot twist at the end left nothing to be desired for. I particularly liked Eve - the main protagonist - other female protagonists are often portrayed as struggling and feeble - Eve draws strength from her vulnerability. She is likeable, determined and very relatable. All in all a great book and listen!

Great book

This could have been a great story but the ‘twist’ fell flat for me and it just fizzled out. A shame

Promising start but weak ending

Not the best purchase I've made. The story was very pedestrian, similar to a made for TV movie!

wish I'd tried a sample before purchase!

This kept me guessing to the end! Really enjoyable and easy to feel who the characters were.
