About this listen

Bernie Gunther has learned the hard way that there's no way to distinguish 'the one from the other'. The cynical PI sees through the deceit and hypocrisy of both friend and foe - a lifesaving skill in postwar Germany.

Munich, 1949, is home to all the backstabbing intrigue that prospers in the aftermath of war. A place where a private eye can find a lot of not-quite-reputable work: cleaning up the Nazi past of well-to-do locals, abetting fugitives in the flight abroad, sorting out rival claims to stolen goods. It's work that fills Bernie with disgust - but it also fills his sorely depleted wallet. Then a woman seeks him out. Her husband has disappeared. She's not looking to get him back - he's a wanted man who ran one of the most vicious concentration camps in Poland. She just wants confirmation that he's dead.

It's a simple enough job. But in post-war Germany, nothing is simple....

Looking back at Mr Kerr’s written corpus, one is so grateful for the success and acclaim to which this, his fourth Bernie Gunther novel, deservedly resounded. I suspect it may have convinced him to carry on with his conflict gumshoe protagonist.
Mr Keeble again delivers a keynote performance.

Superb return to the fray for Mr Kerr

The plot is excellent. I tend to sit back and let a pkot unfold, trying not to guess what could happen next, and this works really well with Bernie Gunter novels.

The narration is great with you, some well delivered accents. You can just imagine how the characters are in postwar Germany – exhausted, cynical, and desperate to cling onto the smallest decency in life in.

Bernie himself is to me superb. I love his descriptions, analogies, and and sarcasm, and this is the only book that has made me stop and reflect on some of the show rather than tell tricks.

If the author also carries the sadness of postwar Germany, well. I’ve come to these books, a little late and there are a few to read to catch up. I have a feeling I’ll be buying them back to back.

Great story with wonderful delivery and narration.

I have enjoyed the Bernie Gunther novels over the years. As a first person narrator his character is central to the pleasure of the story. Here we have him deal with the individuals struggle with history, how does one survive in a time of chaos and how does the individual cope with a moral compass that is out of key with those around you. Moral compromise and guilt haunt Bernie. But the stories aren’t heavy existential philosophy masquerading as a thriller. There is dark comedy, inheriting a hotel in Dachau, there is a twisting plot in which no one is who the say they are, and understanding of events changes as the story develops for the reader and Bernie. And there is the history, always accurate and informative. Some listeners comment on the narrator’s voice, for me Jonathon Keeble sounds a tired European , so I enjoyed his reading and found his Bernie Gunther as authentic as a fictional character can be. A good listen, a good story well told

Characterful historical thriller

A thriller that is also a history lesson delivered supremely by Jonathan Keeble. I can't wait to listen to the next book!

Another perfect Bernie Gunter story

An amazing book which taught me even more about this time period . Very well researched details wrapped up in an intriguing thriller.

Worth app stars!

Ok, it became quite obvious what he’d got himself into, but how was he going to get out of it - that was nice!

Great plot, storyline and the narrator is brilliant - having access to audio books elsewhere makes me appreciate just how much the voice that reads the story adds to the characters and ambience - fits Herr Gunther very well!

Another excellent thriller

You wouldn’t want to be Bernie in this book. The poor chap ends up in deep do do. Battered and bruised doesn’t come close. Well worth a read.

Bernie gets played.

Love Keeble but not for Bernie!! Jeff Hardings quick wise guy delivery worked much better than Keebler slow gravel laden growl! Story and writing is great and even though not suited to the character of Gunter, Keeble still narrates very professionally as always. If only the Jeff Harding versions were still available

Wrong narrator!!

I have really enjoyed my journey with Bernie. This one was so twisted, in every sense of the word, and left me struggling to take off my headphones and acknowledge my family. Bernie feels so real and I just had to find out how he would figure it all out.
