About this listen

*A stunning new unabridged recording, available on audio download*

The acclaimed international bestseller of the Tudor court, during the years of Henry VIII’s pursuit of Anne Boleyn – and the revolutionary sequence of events that followed.

1521. Young Mary Boleyn arrives at court, maid in waiting and favourite to Queen Katherine of Aragon.

Yet Mary catches the eye of the capricious king and – propelled by the ambitions of the powerful Boleyn family – she betrays her queen, and takes her place as Henry VIII’s new mistress.

But while Mary is in childbed, a rival comes to court – her sister Anne, a young woman ruthless in her drive to become queen.

With her own destiny unknown, and the Boleyn enemies gathering, Mary must defy her family – and command her own fate.

With an exclusive afterword written and read by Philippa Gregory, exploring the inspiration behind Mary’s story.

Critic reviews

Praise for Philippa Gregory: "Gregory's research is impeccable which makes her imaginative fiction all the more convincing." (Daily Mail)

"Gregory is great at conjuring a Tudor film-set of gorgeous gowns and golden-lattered dining. She invokes some swoonsome images...while the politics are personal enough to remain pertinent." (Daily Telegraph)

"Subtle and exciting." (Daily Express)

Captivating

Honestly, you won’t be able to stop listening, hoovering, cooking, walking the dog it’s an addictive story, and Philippa Gregory a clever clever woman.
Oh and Vanessa Kirby an inspired reader, just a hop and a leap back in time from Princess Margaret.

Dull narration.

This is an enthralling story spoilt by a monotonous and tedious narration. It needs a storyteller with a bit more variety in her voice and more enthusiasm.

It grows on you

I couldn't forget, to begin with, that this was fiction in a very authentic factual setting, but as the storyline developed I was entirely caught up with it, gaining insights into the political machinations of that period, and whetting my appetite to read more about the period with Wolf Hall.

That Anne was a shrewd and Henry was so selfish but covered it up in the name of the people.

I liked it all and although evident a lot of legend and imagination was involved it is still a good listen.

Really engaging story of the Boleyn’s

I put off listening to this for a while as it is a long story but it is a superbly engaging account of how Henry the 8th moved from one wife to the next told through the eyes of Mary Boleyn. All the more fascinating that our Queen Elizabeth is a descendant of Mary Boleyn (Anne Boleyn’s sister) and Henry the 8th but Mary is rarely spoken of. Captivating story and expertly narrated.

Absolutely loved it

I’m such a fan of this era and know this story well; however never read any of PG’s books before. And although some of the history is fictionalized it is borderline true...from what is known. The writing is superb and the narration excellent. I could picture the story perfectly and gained such sympathy with the characters involved. This won’t be my last PG book...just wonderful.

I loved it!

the ‘Other Boleyn Girl’ is my new favourite book. It tells the story of An Boleyn’s sister from An’s arrival to court, to her beheading we all know her for. It has given me an understanding to Henry VIII and his six wives I did not have before and i am invested. Has romance, drama and emotion, I 100% recommend.
