About this listen

1190 - Humble layman Will Bowman lives in the countryside with his pregnant wife, when soldiers from Richard Lionheart's army tear through his home. Will is beaten unconscious, and awakes to find his wife murdered, his farm burnt down, and his life forever changed.

In vengeance, Will infiltrates Richard's army to find the marauding gang, and finds himself swept along in the march of the Crusades. With the help of new allies and fuelled by his loss, Will crosses Europe with the King's army.

Can Will avenge his wife? Or will he be swept away by the unstoppable force of Richard's Crusade?

Scott Mariani blends historical intrigue in a fast-paced, twist-filled story. Will Bowman is compelling, tough, driven, and deeply human. I throughly enjoyed this read and having finished all the Ben Hope books this was a refreshing change. That said I now have two characters I want to know as to what happens to them...

A thrilling ride from start to finish!

I really wasn’t sure if it would measure up to Bens adventures, but it really does. I do wonder how this can continue into a big series of books, I still hope Ben continues too. I would definitely continue to buy both series - I love the historical approach.

Fills the gap on Ben ..

I'm a long standing fan of the Ben Hope series, eagerly awaiting each new release & even enjoyed Scott's brief foray into the vampire world quite some years ago. I'm relatively new to Audible & have enjoyed the narration of Colin Mace. And so to Will Bowman's tale .... this is not a genre I would ever usually choose. The story was interesting and full to bursting with historical detail (daily life, political & religious events & motivations etc). Whilst it was easy to visualise, I didn't "live in the story" as easily as modern day Ben Hope adventures. This could be, in part, due to the narrator. He has a very pleasant style, a wide range of accents for the different characters, no mispronunciations or annoying inflections. However, as another review stated, he has no change in pace or style for the exciting or perilous stages of the story. I never held my breath, waiting for the outcome of a tricky situation and I think this prevented me becoming as invested in Will's adventure as I would have expected. In summary, the book was enjoyable but not compelling - I'll try the next one but I'm not counting the days till it's released.

Certainly a change in direction

As always, I love the style of writing and the depth created in the characters but I feel this is a story that is so similar to another I had to double check before I continued. It felt like a leas gritty version of the Master of War by David Gilman. Still enjoyable in a period of fascinating history.

Good but the same

It’s a good story but the narrator read it like it was a book on Jackanory. Very little tension or excitement in his voice just a pleasant gentle storytelling. His voice completely lacked colour or depth. The contrast with Ben Hope stories couldn’t be greater. Come back Colin Mace !!

First of all I made a mistake ordering this audio-book I thought it was a Ben Hope adventure (That's on me lol) I found the story slow and boring,

Big disappointment
