Summary

When Elizabeth drops her beloved only daughter off at college, she holds back the tears…fighting her worries about an empty nest with the thought of all the adventures that she and her husband Joel can now enjoy together. But as soon as they sit down to eat dinner that evening, Joel drops a bombshell. He wants a break.

Searching for an escape, Elizabeth discovers an apartment in Rome that is only available for three months rental to ‘an English woman of a certain age’. She reads on to find out the philosophy of Veronica, the 75-year-old owner, is that there is always joy to be found, however difficult the circumstances, and that it is an insult to the gift of life to not live it joyfully and fully – and that there is no better place to make this happen than Rome, the most beautiful city in the world.

Elizabeth accepts the challenge, and on arrival, finds that Veronica has a numbered list of challenges for her.

Lovely story

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The descriptions of Rome were delightful - I've never been and am even more determined to visit since listening to this book.

It's so easy to see how women allow themselves to be swayed by the needs of others and feel guilty for indulging their own interests and passions. But this tale of a woman who slowly blossoms into herself is lovely to witness.

I look forward to reading the sequel.

Rome revisited

I absolutely loved this audio book. Being quite a regular visitor to Rome I have a cousin who lives and works there Kerry has transported me back there with so many of the sights and sounds. Wondering if I can go again this autumn of winter and visit some of the places mentioned. I loved the characters and wanted to kiss Beth for the decision she ultimately made. I felt well satisfied with the way it ended. Can't wait to move into the next one. Roll on 1st September!

A wonderful story and a lovely trip to Rome

I have to say that it was the fact that this book was set in Rome that swung it for me when I chose it. I really enjoyed the story though and the narrator was very easy to listen to. I was once a regular visitor to Rome, returning year after year to spend a week sightseeing and people watching as I wandered the streets, often off the beaten track, pretending to myself I wasn’t a tourist. I loved the book and the storyline but most of all I loved the memories it brought back to me of the time spent there with loved ones and the people I met on my visits.

Fascinated with the plot twists going around the protagonist’s mind

I love books set in Italy regardless of genre (Sarah Winman, Christobel Kent, Daniel Silva, Elizabeth Edmonson, Karen Swan, Michele Giutari…) so was delighted to find this intriguing new (to me) voice with an engaging story to tell. Beth’s struggles with uncertainties/certainties/doubt drew me into her world. Next listen will be the sequel/prequel (?) - I’ll tell you when I have read it !

Excellent

I particularly loved that this book was set in Rome. I love Italy and she brought it to life for me interwoven with the main characters life. Congratulations…again … on your writing and of course to Emma your narrator who reads your words with just the right amount of care and emotion. Many, many thanks to you both.

Fantastic story

I liked the honesty in this book. Particularly about the main character and her feelings. And the Rome theme made it even better. Really enjoyable.

A beautiful book to lose yourself in.

I so loved this audiobook, perfectly read as always by Emma Spurgin Hussey. I always finish Kerry's books feeling slightly sad that I've got to know the characters and then have to leave them behind at the end, Then I wonder which book to choose next, fearing it won't be as good as the last. I needn't worry though because all of Kerry's books that I've experienced have been perfect and she delivers each time. I'm glad that there will be a sequal to the Rome Apartment. This first book in the series has been an inspiration and will encourage me to venture out on my own more and take a closer look at the things I don't usually notice. Thanks Kerry for another superb book.
