Summary

A feisty comedian. A former cop with a wounded heart. An unusual roommate arrangement...

Comedian Stephanie Renshaw hopes to finally get her big break in LA. A chance encounter lands her the perfect apartment close to the comedy clubs, but it comes with a catch: She needs a roommate to afford the rent.

Enter Rae Coleman, a former police officer working the door at one of the top comedy clubs. After getting injured in the line of duty and losing her job with the LAPD, Rae guards her wounded soul behind a tough exterior.

At first, the two clash horribly before a tentative friendship develops. Bit by bit, Steph manages to break through the walls Rae has built around her.

But Steph has never been in a relationship, preferring casual flings, and Rae isn't sure she's ready to be happy again. Will they find the courage to open themselves up to love?

Contains mature themes.

Favourite Jae book yet

Very refreshing to read a book that does not rely on miscommunication or no communication at all to move the plot along. I really fell in love with Steph and Rae and their story. I also learned a lot about comedy and eyes. A truly enjoyable listen.

funny and light

Great story. Finally people that don't live the impossible life or a famous or super rich character. People that have suffered and seen the difficulties of life. But all served with humor and smart writing. The narrator once again delivered amazing work.

Great story. Mediocre narrator.

I'm a huge fan of Jae's work & this book was no exception. After listening to "Just for Show", I was desperate for a Steph spin off story. Jae not only delivered, but smashed the story out the park.

Jae balenced the drama & seriousness of Rae's backstory with the humour of a comedians life perfectly. I laughed multiple times at the jokes Steph & other characters said. I loved getting to know Steph & her relationship with her family more. It felt fresh, even though the characters have appeared in another book. This story could definitely be a stand alone story. I adored getting to know Rae. She was such an interesting & likeable character, & blended perfectly with Steph. The descriptive imagery was sublime, I felt immersed in the characters world. My only criticism in relation to the story was that at times their journey to becoming a couple felt a bit stilted & forced. Although, that may have been more to do with the narration.

This is the second book narrated by Lori Prince I've listened to & I think it most likely will be my last. I decided to give her another go, as the previous audiobook was one I had read with my eyeballs & I figured maybe I disliked it because her narration didn't match what I imagined in my head. However, this audiobook would have been fresh with no previous comparison (except the small snippets of Steph in "Just for Show" narrated by the amazing Angela Dawe). Unfortunately, my opinion of Lori still stands. Her performance was solid, but didn't blow me away. Her voices & accents weren't distinctive enough, Claire & Lana didn't sound remotely like they did in "Just for Show", & in my opinion she didn't enhance the story to its full potential. I don't regret listening to the audiobook, but I think perhaps I would have appreciated the story more had I read the book with my eyeballs instead.

I still highly recommend the story, but perhaps don't listen directly after you've listened to Angela Dawes performance in "Just for Show", as the characters voice are so different it may confuse you.

A solid follow on book, interesting storyline!

I enjoyed this second book, I felt like the storyline was interesting and as usual Jae writes the more challenging aspects of the characters journey with depth, warmth and empathy. ❤️‍🩹

Laboured and predictable

The concept of the story is okay, but it’s delivery was pretty dull to be honest. Parts of the book dragged on without anything really happening.

Ray’s ‘emotional trauma’ was self indulgent, predictable and boring. The usual, ‘Someone died and it’s all my fault’ theme when in actuality the death wasn’t even remotely her fault.

The depiction of Steph’s parents as patronising, vegan psychologists was a bit lame as well. There was a lot of negative stereotypes about both vegan food and psychologists in the book which I found unnecessary and cliche (I’m neither a psychologist or a vegan by the way) with the usual references to ‘rabbit food’ and being constantly ‘psychoanalysed’ being boring, predictable and unnecessary, without any meaningful addition to the story.
It just made easy targets of vegans and made a false depiction of what psychologists actually do.

I’ve read a lot of this author’s books and enjoyed them, but I can honestly say this one was a waste of my time and a precious credit.
