About this listen

The extraordinarily rich, dark, panoramic tale of an orphaned boy's quest for truth and then for vengeance as war rages across 17th-century Europe.

Amidst the chaos of the Thirty Years' War, Jack Fiskardo embarks upon a quest that will carry him inexorably from France to Amsterdam and then onto the battlefields of Germany. As he grows to manhood will he be able to unravel the mystery of his father's death? Or will his father's killers find him first?

The Silver Wolf is a tale of secrets and treachery and the relentlessness of fate - but it is also a story of courage and compassion, of love and loyalty and ultimately of salvation too.

Book One of Fiskardo's War marks the start of a series of unforgettable, epic historical fiction for fans of Ken Follett and Kate Mosse.

"A powerfully impressive debut. Multi-layered, compelling and intriguing, The Silver Wolf draws us into the murky underbelly of Europe's Thirty Years' War. Gripping stuff!" —MINETTE WALTERS, bestselling author of The Last Hours and The Swift and the Harrier

Riveting

I’d never have read this if my sister hadn’t recommended it but I’m so glad I did. It’s an astonishingly good historical novel, utterly convincing in its depiction of the ravages of the Thirty Years War and with a hero who bursts off the page with energy, determination and charm.

Engrossing Historical Fiction

Thoroughly enjoyed this, brought the period alive for me - as a reenactor of the period I am often over particular but the story engaged me that I wasn't distracted to query details. Well written, my only criticism is I wasn't aware it was a 'to be continued' novel, and now impatient for the follow up.

Excellent historical adventure

This was amazing so well written with action and a degree of humour as found in such adventures of camaraderie. Definitely strong characters

Worth getting the combined book audiobook in order to check plot points, character lists etc

Absorbing Historical Fiction

An absorbing, intriguing and dark story of a young man's search for answers and revenge - set during the 30 Years War. Centered on Jack Fiskado who we first meet in Amsterdam as a boy. He catches the eye of a sailor on the up when he rescues a prize horse from drowning. From here we travel with him back and forward in time: to childhood trauma, bar room brawls, battles and romps. Along the way encountering an huge cast of convincing, engaging and entertaining characters. The narrator is excellent keeping the right pace for the story and tone for the characters.

A Curate’s Egg

There were a couple of really good episodes in this long story of 30 Years War shenanigans but I’m afraid none of the characters really did much for me.
