About this listen

A PopSugar, Oprah Daily, and BookBub Most Anticipated Romance of 2022!

Victorian high society’s most daring equestrienne finds love and an unexpected ally in her fight for independence in the strong arms of London’s most sought after and devastatingly handsome half-Indian tailor.

Evelyn Maltravers understands exactly how little she's worth on the marriage mart. As an incurable bluestocking from a family tumbling swiftly toward ruin, she knows she'll never make a match in a ballroom. Her only hope is to distinguish herself by making the biggest splash in the one sphere she excels: on horseback. In haute couture. But to truly capture London's attention she'll need a habit-maker who's not afraid to take risks with his designs - and with his heart.

Half-Indian tailor Ahmad Malik has always had a talent for making women beautiful, inching his way toward recognition by designing riding habits for Rotten Row's infamous Pretty Horsebreakers - but no one compares to Evelyn. Her unbridled spirit enchants him, awakening a depth of feeling he never thought possible.

But pushing boundaries comes at a cost and not everyone is pleased to welcome Evelyn and Ahmad into fashionable society. With obstacles spanning between them, the indomitable pair must decide which hurdles they can jump and what matters most: making their mark or following their hearts?

Didn’t like the Seance and spiritualist input at all it spoiled it for me unfortunately

Unfortunately I couldn’t finish this which is a real disappointment. I have read it and know that it’s a lovely story with an interesting plot, but the narration is on this audiobook is very poor. Lydia Hanman’s English accent is distinctly American and is quite off putting with lots of mispronunciations. Her delivery just doesn’t keep you gripped. I would rather Vidish Athavale, who has a lovely clear voice narrate the entire story because chopping and changing means it loses pace. It’s a shame Alex Wyndham wasn’t chosen as he really brings the Parish Orphans series to life.

Beautiful story but terrible narration

Sadly, I agree with another reviewer. This book was disappointingly boring. I’ve loved other books by this author, but this one was lacking the magic. The plot was plodding, the romance was tepid, and more thought seemed to have been put into aligning to historical real life happenings than was put into making sure it was a story that grabbed you by the heart and drew you in. Still a far better book than many you get in this genre in terms of quality of writing and the narration, but the story itself wasn’t up to the standard I would have hoped for from this author.

It was ok

The narrator's irritating mispronounciation of the 'a' sound proliferates. 'Gas' becomes 'gars' for example. The plot is quite different but skims the surface of spiritualism and racism. It's quite lightweight all round though.

Irritating narration

This was more than a forbidden romance between a high society Lady and a Tradesman, it had the added dimension of belonging . The story gave a spotlight onto India under colonial rule of Britain, and the children born of two cultures, yet belonged to neither.
It was such a lovely tale full of angst and excitement with a dash of heat (no spice, but still passionate).
