About this listen

Daniel Pell is a contemporary Charles Manson. A petty criminal with a history of anti-social behaviour, he had a group of women living with him in a quasi cult in central California. Eight years ago, he and another man viciously slaughtered a family for no apparent reason, though the three women in his "family" were absolved of any part in the deaths. Now, present day, Pell has escaped and interrogator and analyst Kathryn Dance must find out where he is and why he's staying near the prison he escaped from.©2007 Jeffery Deaver (P)2007 Simon and Schuster Modern Detectives Mystery Suspense Fiction Exciting

Enjoyed this book, the story kept me guessing and was quite interesting to the end. Narrator was good too. Just a bit annoyed that the audio skipped quite a lot

Good story, recording a bit dodgy

A great story, with Deaver's characteristic twists and turns throughout. All the upcoming twists are signposted - but in such a way that you only realise what you heard after the plot changes away from you. Brilliant.

The reader is absolutely perfect - a perfect voice and the story is excellently read. The whole flavour of the reading is hugely strengthened by the careful sadness in the reader's voice to match the main character's attitude.

Wonderful.

TOTALLY EXCELLENT READER AND READING

What made the experience of listening to The Sleeping Doll the most enjoyable?

The overall experience! The story is a brilliantly crafted thriller, very exciting to listen to. The lead characters are all very well written, and believable. It is very refreshing to have a well written female lead, who doesn't have any of the usual cliches - alcoholism, dark secret past etc. The angle the story takes is also good - body language and behaviour as opposed to beating up suspects. Dare I say it is more intelligent than most?

What other book might you compare The Sleeping Doll to, and why?

This book compares very favourably with Jeffery Deaver's other thrillers featuring Lincoln Rhyme, in which series this main character, Kathryn Dance, makes her first appearance. They are a cut above the rest of the thrillers out there, the emphasis being on character and plot, rather than cheap thrills.

Have you listened to any of Anne Twomey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't had the pleasure. The pacing of her narration is excellent, really suiting the story. Her delivery is excellent, very clear and easy to listen to. Her use of male and female voices is very good, and her accents are very good also.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was certainly tempting. I admit I fell into the old "just a few more minutes" trap. It did make the time spent on the machines at the gym much more enjoyable.

Gripping from start to finish

A little predictable - but a good plot and interesting characters. Well narrated too. Recommended.

I was dubious about the new character Kathryn Dance as I'm a big fan of Licoln Rhyme but I really liked this story. Her character is believable and likeable. My only critisism would be the constant references to kenesics (her speciality), it's obviously how her character thinks but it can get a bit annoying (although interesting). The villain is also very good in this book and I hope that people like him don't exist in the real world! I liked the narrator but wanted her to be a little more dynamic at some points but all in all it's a great story.

Really good.
