About this listen
A spectacular voice-driven mystery from a highly acclaimed crime writer.
How do you solve a murder when everyone thinks you're guilty?
Marjorie Crowe lives in Kilgoyne, Scotland. The locals put her age at somewhere between 55 and 70. They think she's divorced or a lifelong spinster; that she used to be a librarian, a pharmacist, or a witch. They think she's lonely, or ill, or maybe just plain rude. For the most part, they leave her be.
But one day, everything changes.
Local teenager Charlie McKee is found hanging in the woods, and Marjorie is the first one to see his body. When what she saw turns out to be impossible, the police have their doubts. And when another young person goes missing, the tide of suspicion turns on her.
Is Marjorie the monster, or the victim? And how far will she go to fight for her name?

Turns the image of a bad witch on its head and reveals the danger of prejudice against the unfamiliar
Marjorie questions herself but stays true to her feelings and instincts and is really an insider in her caring and awareness of others. She accepts that others treat her as an outsider and it is their fear that makes them behave how they do. The messages about human behaviours and what drives them come through the story whilst telling a gripping murder mystery. I liked the building trust and respect between her and the local detectives. Also liked the modern tale of a woman who explains what it means to her to identify with the word witch, her family history and the impact of hateful comments by not only local but wider social media. Slightly one step too far in the final requirement to suspend disbelief but the finding adds to a satisfactory tying up of loose ends. Appealing main characters, fragile youths and some seriously unpleasant and villainous adults kept this book entertaining and thought provoking. Extremely good performance by the reader.

A fine Scottish crime book.
I heard the author talk about the book on a BBC Scotland football radio show and thought I'd check it out. I'm so glad I did. A great mix of ancient Celtic folklore and modern day trolling and read beautifully. First class and I look forward to listening to more by the author.

Extremely interesting and beautifully read
Having thoroughly enjoyed The Undiscovered Deaths of Grace McGill and I was in a bit of a reading slump, I thought I’d try a second book by C S Robertson.
The Scottish scene is set carefully so that I could imagine Kilgoyne but I had a good look at the places where the story, a tense mystery, is set.
The characterization is done well although sometimes I found the descriptions of Marjorie and her thoughts touching on repetitive.
Robertson explores the treatment of women deemed to be witches alongside the drama taking place around the life of Marjorie. The elements of the supernatural are explored sensitively.
I found it enjoyable to listen to excellent narration from Jenny Lee. Am

The reader gives a real picture of the village and her connection to it
This compares historical and up to day treatment of how women who were either healers or stood up to men were treated and named witches - in todays society how social media can take over and “persecute” a woman who is different. Thoroughly recommend it- well read.

a lovely unwinding story
very well written and beautiful narration, linking the othering of people who break conventional status quos and linking this to the past histories of women accused of witchcraft, who were accused, judged and killed mainly by males

Gripping Story, Brilliant Narration, 5 Stars
I loved everything about this audiobook. Many aspects I found to be unlike any of the hundreds of other books I've listened to which meant once started I couldn't stop listening.

The main character was annoying
The main character somehow instead off feeling empathy for her I found her annoying ending up not caring what happened
