About this listen
For as long as Lottie Fiske can remember, the only people who seem to care about her have been her best friend, Eliot, and the mysterious letter-writer who sends her birthday gifts. But now strange things and people are arriving on the island Lottie calls home, and Eliot's getting sicker, with a disease the doctors have given up trying to cure. Lottie is helpless, useless, powerless.
And then a door opens in the apple tree.
Follow Lottie down through the apple roots to another world - a world of magic both treacherous and beautiful - in pursuit of the impossible: a cure for the incurable, a use for the useless, and protection against the pain of loss.
Book 1 in the spellbinding Water and the Wild fantasy trilogy.

Could have been Listening to Radio 4
This was my first foray into audiobook listening and I was not disappointed. The vivid descriptions of the passage of youth were thought provoking and brought back many memories of my own childhood, from taking dangerous pot shots at advertising boards, to exploring the old car dump at the end of our allotment. How innocent those actions seemed at the time with little thought to the harm we were doing. The interaction between characters is strong and gelled together perfectly by Nigel Peever's narration. The longer I listened the more I was drawn into the story, invested in the characters and eager to hear what happened next. Normally I have a very short attention span, but in this instance I lay back in my chair and let the narrator take me wherever the author wanted me to go. My abiding thought was that this production would not be out of place being aired on Radio 4,; serialised.
I was impressed throughout by the technical elements that went into the narration, particularly the sound layers, which complemented as opposed to distracted. Clever, very clever and added another dimension to an already good book. Minor fluctuations in character vocals did not distract in any way. As a narrator myself I struggle with adolescent and child voices, so I know how difficult it is to maintain the accent and pitch.
I will be looking out for more titles by this author and narrator

The Water and the Wild
A well written and narrated story. This is perfect for all ages and one that I have used on long car journeys with my family and for a bedtime story that is done in stages inorder to give the children time to visualise and picture what they think could happen next.
