About this listen

Lie back and think of England....

England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless, and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage.

Curtis's search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And there's something else they share - a mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling.

As the house party's elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail, and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before....

Warning: Contains explicit male/male encounters, ghastly historical attitudes, and some extremely stiff upper lips.

This is one of my favorite M/M stories: exciting plot with refreshing characters, enough seriousness and tenderness with just a tinge of light-heartedness. The narration is not always perfect, especially when it comes to the pronunciation of some words, but I like the voices adopted for the main characters. Overall a very enjoyable listen.

Enjoyable listen

I love K J Charles but couldn't finish this audiobook as the narrator is so awful. Stilted, odd pronunciation, different volumes.

Awful narration

A tumble-you-along story with characters so sympathetic and admirable. (And some pleasing dirty bits!)

Superb as ever from KJ

Maurice pronounced Maureese instead of the more normal Morris. Mullioned pronounced moollioned. These irritated, but particularly Maureese as the name is frequently mentioned throughout the book. Otherwise excellent.

strange pronunciation?

I enjoy KJ Charles books, this is as good as others, nothing outstanding. Narration was good, precise characters and appropriately animated. However, he does the thing many other narrators do: fade away at the end of sentences. Otherwise, very entertaining.

a good KJ charles book

My first foray in to M/M romance after a recommendation from a friend and thoroughly enjoyed it! The story was compelling and I was soon rooting for the two main male characters.

Would recommend!

Love the story. The narrator didn't match my idea of Daniel's character, but that might be because I've read the book so often! Otherwise, very good.

Really good read!

Many kept their secret throughput life so when that special person comes along they mustn't let them get away and this story tells it all.

Homosexuality in the early days

I enjoyed the tense edge of the seat drama and the lead characters were likeable. This story was like a very mild mm Poirot. The book summary claims to contain explicit mm scenes which it doesn’t.

Good tense drama

It's a toss up between this, Jackdaw and the Charm of Magpies series as to which is my fave KJ read, although books 2 & 3 of the Society of Gentleman series run them a pretty close second or fifth 😉. While I'm waiting for the Charm of Magpies series to come out on audio [with a suitably impressive narrator like...say Nicholas Boulton for example nudge, nudge], thought I'd give this one a listen.

Well, I'm glad I did BUT I was also a tad underwhelmed by Audible's choice of narrator I have to admit. I thought the mis-pronunciations were maybe down to Tom Carter being nervous, but I see that he's made several audios under different names, so that shouldn't have been a problem really. He also needs to work on his female voices and stop leaving uncomfortable pauses between characters. Maybe this was his first 'gay' romance, who knows?? Whatever the reason, he would definitely need to up his game before I listen to something else from him. 3.5 stars for the narration.

Story is amazing....the narration not so much.
