About this listen

Harald Darrowdelve has squandered every gift life gave him—until he entered the dungeon beneath Flutic and received a demon's dark blessing.

Weak, privileged, and directionless no more, Harald now commands powers forged in darkness. But each new ability and hard-won level drags him deeper into the ruthless politics of noble houses, shadowy rivals, and the celestial war burning beneath the city's streets.

With every victory, the dungeon reshapes him—but at what cost? As Harald ascends the path of power, will he remain master of his fate or become a servant to the darkness within?

A work I cannot recommend enough. A must "read" for those who enjoy complex characters, realistic relationships, and refreshing reimaginings on both the classic and litrpg dungeon delving action/adventure formats, all whist maintaining the core joy of the genres.

As a reader of the web-novel, I can say without a doubt that this is a well written and enjoyable story that only improves thoughout the books, and it is a sheer joy seeing the first brought to life by John Pirhalla's engaging and playful vocalisation.

Set in a subtly dystopian and cut-throat world, this story follows the rise of a formerly wastrel son of a nouveau-riche powerhouse adventurer, his struggles and successes in reforging himself and changing his fate. The narrative that follows him is all too cutting and thoughtful, challenging, subverting, and questioning often overused character/story tropes surrounding the dominant, fiercely independent, secretive, and progression addicted type of protagonist popular in stories of this kind.

Harold is one of the cores of this story, and the small group of central characters that drive this story are just as interesting, entertaining, and nuanced as the protagonist, each having their own lives, faults, and stories without distracting from the flow of the overall narrative: not one of them feels like they fill in a trope, and each of them feel unique and alive. The action scenes are as visceral and engaging as the political tension is looming and threatening. The dungeon is filled with interesting mysteries and fearsome monsters, both classic reimaginings and imaginatively new. And the plots, both arc based and overarching, are fascinating and theory inducing for the "reader". Finally, Tucker has a sophisticated nature in subtext and foreshadowing, with many scenes rich in little meanings and hints.

This is a worthwhile and enjoyable experience for both teen readers looking to seek something more thought provoking, and adults wanting something fun.

A great story with much left to come.
