About this listen
Random House presents the audiobook edition of Toll the Hounds: The Malazan Book of the Fallen 8 by Steven Erikson, read by Michael Page.
In Darujhistan, the saying goes that Love and Death shall arrive together, dancing...
It is summer and the heat is oppressive, yet the discomfiture of the small rotund man in the faded red waistcoat is not entirely due to the sun. Dire portents plague his nights and haunt the city's streets like fiends of shadow. Assassins skulk in alleyways but it seems the hunters have become the hunted. Hidden hands pluck the strings of tyranny like a fell chorus. Strangers have arrived, and while the bards sing their tragic tales, somewhere in the distance can be heard the baying of hounds. All is palpably not well. And in Black Coral too, ruled over by Anomander Rake Son of Darkness, something is afoot - memories of ancient crimes surface, clamouring for revenge, so it would seem that Love and Death are indeed about to make their entrance...
This is epic fantasy at its most imaginative, storytelling at its most exciting.

wonderful
if you've made it this far then you know the sprawling narrative is tough to keep your head around. I would say the only complaint I have is the questions around harlos story in this but overall another solid performance and story

Fantastic build-up
It’s like having surgery: there’s all that worry and fear as it arrives, then you push your way through because you know it is definitely worthwhile. You have the most skilful, artistic and precise surgeon slicing and knitting. The relief that it is done, that you are full of positive change and charge -It’s wondrous!
The recovery is short, for you know there are two more ops to go…

One of the best books, but unfortunately let down by the performance
I really liked the style SE used for this book. And, the final chapters are my favourite of all the Malazan books. Especially the arc around Rake and Mother dark. However, I just could not get over the voice used for Rake. Having reread the books several times, I do not think his portrayal by the reader was anything Anomander would and should have sounded like.
But, several other characters were good, such as Kallor, Karsa and Hood.

Brilliant!
This series is magnetic and magnificent; dark fantasy, darker characters, yet full of some kind of hope for humanity...
Brilliant book.
Brilliant series.

The empire strikes back of Malazan Book of the fallen
Story is brilliant as ever, would 100% agree with the other reviews, narration is great, and Michael does an amazing job. I felt this one as my title says is the Empire Strikes Back of the series, with bad things happening to good people. Tho Steven isn’t as brutal to our hearts as Joe Abercrombie is and some of the deaths I knew were coming, some were a total shock and still left me aghast! If you are this far into the series, well you are in for the long haul anyway and this review will be of little use, if you are new? Go away and start on the first book! You won’t be disappointed, just strap yourselves in, becuase it’s one hell of a rise!
