About this listen

An action-packed novel of warfare, courage and camaraderie in the Roman Empire, from the Sunday Times-best-selling author.

The gripping new Cato and Macro adventure in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. Not to be missed by readers of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell.

Tribune Cato and Centurion Macro are based on the eastern border of the Empire, facing Rome's deadly enemy, Parthia. The signs are that Parthia is preparing for war. And the two battle-hardened veterans are ready for their greatest-ever military challenge.

Always like the Cato and Macro stories, be a shame not to have Macro in the future books. So we'll written and such a flowing story line. This is the first audio book in the series I have purchased and am pleased to have done so, the narration is perfect for it. Give it a shot.

Another great Simon Scarrow story.

It’s another classic story though a little predictable, I wonder if the Kato and macro story will now have a happy ending

If you’ve got this far in the series you know

What a great book. It is both adventurous and filled with the terror of campaigns. As usual for Scarrow the book is very well written and informative - very much enhanced by a marvellous narrator. I love this Roman series but I would have to say I enjoyed this book the best.

Excellent

I can't recommend this series enough for people who live stories of Rome. it's violent, it's vulgar and it's perfectly written.

I love this series, it's maintained a fabulous standard of character, story-telling, action and history in almost every single book. Jonathan Keeble, well I think pitchforks would definitely be raised if anyone else tried to voice Macro and Cato now, he really adds to Simon Scarrow's stories. Of course the stars of the show are Macro and Cato who we've followed across Eurasia for years now. They work together like a well-oiled machine and the genesis of Cato from, as Macro so delicately puts it from a 'streak of piss' to the man in command was done superbly.

However, Macro has a lot of miles on the clock, his suspension is starting to creak and his 0-60 time is not quite in Ferrari's territory any more. He's in love with Petronella, the real general in their household and his mind is turning to thoughts of spending time with her, warm fires and retirement. just like a certain old baggy cloth cat. But, he's a soldier at heart and pledges just 'one last campaign'. Despite him being a somewhat grizzled veteran now he is still very much a force of nature and Scarrow sends his two heroes into two diverse adventures that once again test their every ability.

This is stirring stuff again and 'Traitors of Rome' delivers its own thrilling adventures completely while setting the scene for what you would suspect is going to be an absolutely epic campaign to come.

Macro's Bagpuss Moment!

I have been enjoying the Macro and Cato series for such a long time now. This is another amazing entry into the novel. The narrator does such a fine job with narrating Apollonius, Cato and Macro. I love Macro’s voice acting. It’s exactly how I would imagine the tough old grizzled veteran.

This novel has a lot of good things in it. The descriptions of the Parthian Empire. Macro and his marriage with Petronella, and Cato’s little son. The capital of Ctesphion. The Parthian King. There is so much detail that it can’t be summarised in all good detail. Simon does a terrific job in illustrating why the Parthians were so dangerous in the Eastern Borders of Rome. There’s mutiny, sieges, the descriptions of the cities, the battle scenes are really engaging when the narrator is really doing a fantastic job of making this book come alive. Apollonius is one of the best characters in the book. Cato embarks on an expedition to Parthia to negotiate a peace treaty with the Parthians. Anyone that knows Roman history knows that is impossible. The Parthians are a cunning bunch. They will seek to destroy Rome, and their successors, the Sassanids ensured the Romans got a bloody nose.

Here you’ll go through towns, cities, the Silk Road, merchants, conniving Greek pirate captains, heroic soliders, epic swordfights, mutiny and starvation and sieges. That’s what I can call this novel. There is so much attention to detail, so much stuff that I can’t summarise it in all but one go. It’s really that good. Get the audiobook. It’s fantastic voice acting. I felt immersed. Though I wished they had a female voice narrator for Petronella. Honestly, an amazing effort. When will Simon Scarrow turn this into an alternate history series or something like that? I’d love to see Cato explore new lands or go to America. That’s just me. Otherwise, a solid 5.5.

Fantastic Narration. Really Felt Immersed
