About this listen

Ferocity, heroism, and savage bloodshed: the next gripping instalment in the Twilight of Empire series.

When the simmering conflict between Rome and Persia threatens once again to ignite into open war, there is only one man the Emperor Constantine can trust to hold the eastern frontier. Aurelius Castus, retired general of the empire. When the summons comes to command an army once more, he obeys with a heavy heart. Is he still a fearsome fighting machine? Will his young, ambitious officers respect and follow a great soldier of former days? When tragedy strikes, Castus must race to defend the last bulwark standing against the might of Persia.

In the pitiless heat of the Syrian desert, engulfed by whirling sandstorms and facing a fearless, treacherous foe, Castus knows that the fight ahead will be the fiercest he has ever known.

Thank you Mr Ross. A truly mesmerising and inspiring series from the first word to your last. And of course, to Mr Keeble too for an incredibly plausible and entertaining performance. Will miss these characters, these friends.

So very grateful!

What exciting, nail biting action and outstanding narrative by Jonathan Keeble. I'm so sorry this is the last book in the series. What a wonderful series of six books. I thought that Simon Scarrow was unsurpassed but he now has a very fine peer in Ian Ross.

For those who have not yet started listening to this series by Ian Ross, I envy you.

The tale of Castus has gone from strength to strength and didn't disappoint with the final book as so many other series seem to do. It didn't get bogged down in historical clutter but bounced along skimming into it as and when needed to keep it moving on. Nor did it overload you with a multitude of Roman named characters trying to produce an implausible mystery of twists and turns but with enough drama and plots to keep you wanting more.
Jonathan Keebles story telling took you along the journey with Castus. You could feel the press of bodies in the Roman front lines and the tension waiting for the next attack, feel the grit in your mouth and smell the smoke from the fires as each battle was fought out. It eft you cheering encouragement when things were looking bleak and oddly silent when a friend was lost. His selection of character accents while perhaps not geographically correct was not a distraction, even the Bishop.

Never a dull listen

Absolutely brilliant story. From the first word of book 1 to the last word of this one, the author and narrator have woven a love story into the brutality of a dying empire. Intrigue and deception threading their way through the narrative. The humanity of the characters was epitomised by Diogenese' and Castus' relationship. A mix of sadness and joy at the end too. Superb
