About this listen
How can you speak up for someone accused of a savage murder? Or sway a jury? Or get a judge to drop a case?
In this memoir, murder case lawyer William Clegg revisits his most intriguing trials, from the acquittal of Colin Stagg to the shooting of Jill Dando, to the man given life because of an earprint.
All the while he lays bare the secrets of his profession, from the rivalry among barristers to the nervous moments before a verdict comes back, and how our right to a fair trial is now at risk.
Under the Wig is for anyone who wants to know the reality of a murder trial. It has been praised as 'gripping' by The Times, 'riveting' by the Sunday Express and "fascinating" by the Secret Barrister, who described the author as 'one of our country's greatest jury advocates.'
Several prominent barristers, including Matthew Scott and Bob Marshall-Andrews QC, have said Under the Wig is a "must read" for anyone with an interest in the criminal law. Switch off the TV dramas and see real criminal law in action.
Well-known cases featured:
- The Murder of Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common
- The Chillenden Murders (Dr Lin and Megan Russell)
- The Trial of Private Lee Clegg
- The Murder of Jill Dando
- The first Nazi war crimes prosecution in the UK
- The Murder of Joanna Yeates
- The Rebekah Brooks Phone Hacking Trial

Brilliant, and very honest.
I was surprised at how honest an account is provided in this book. It is clear this gentleman deserves the praise he receives as a skilful advisor and orator. I learned much from this exploration into life at the senior criminal bar and what it is really like carrying all that pressure.

Gripping at times and fascinating generally
This book is suitable for laypersons and is simply written to that effect. The cases Clegg has tried are very interesting and he gives you an honest insight to a day in the life of a criminal defence barrister. A thoroughly endearing and charming listen.

humanising the law representatives
it was very interesting to hear about a defence lawyer's perspective of the law. it also shook off some negative opinions I had of that area. riveting stories and a unique insight into infamous cases.

Interesting Reflections
I only spent a brief time in the CJS at my local Crown Court as an Usher. However, I found it fascinating. This is why I selected this work, having listened to others on the subject. It was very interesting, covering both aspects of that part of the CJS and some famous cases the author has been involved in. Thoroughly recommended.

Interesting straight forward account
Poor halting performance let down an interesting account of a life at the bar. Some well known cases and enjoyable insights.

Thoroughly well written and brilliantly narrated.
Exactly what you would expect from a top barrister. Very well written and performed in the manner you would expect from a top QC.
You will be surprised just how many high profile cases William Clegg QC has worked on - there are many cases you will remember reading about in the paper. A very interesting insight into a world few people get to see.

⚖
Certainly an interesting insight into Law, and true crime cases as gripping as any sherlock holmes case- and more shocking...
Unfortunately does tend to delve a little too much into politics.
