About this listen

The fifth adventure of Captain William Laurence and his extraordinary fighting dragon, Temeraire, as they travel from the shores of Britain to China and Africa.

Laurence and Temeraire have betrayed the British. They have foiled their attempts to inflict death upon the French dragons by sharing the cure they found in Africa with their enemy.

But following their conscience has a price. Laurence feels he must return to face the consequences, and as soon as they land they are taken into custody. Laurence is condemned to the gallows and Temeraire faces a life of captivity in the breeding grounds. None of their friends or allies can come to their aid, for every hand is needed elsewhere.

Britain is completely unprepared for Bonaparte invasion and the advanced tactics of his own celestial dragon – Temeraire's mortal enemy – Lien.

Great continuation of a unique story

Though its sad to see lawrence’s fortunes take a downward turn, it is still fun to follow his and temeraire’s adventures, love the battle scenes and the characterisation, highly recommended

Another ripping yarn in the Temeraire series

Once again Simon Vance's performance is perfection
The story line is gripping and the narrator really takes you into the fictional Napoleonic era making it utterly believable Dragons and all.

I've greatly enjoyed this series but feel this book is the strongest so far. great narrator and the fire breathing dragon is hilarious.

A good listen, but lesser to its predecessors

Simon Vance is excellent as usual with his performance and characterisation. The story, while good and containing many excellent characters is not as engaging as the previous 3 books. As I dont want to spoil anything I shall simply say that it is a rather meandering story and, at times hard to follow.

I still recommend it though. At its core a story about a Captain's devotion to his Dragon.
