Every year in the great Temple City of Duvalpore, the image of the Wheel of the Infinite must be painstakingly remade to ensure another year of peace and harmony for the Celestial Empire. Every hundred years the sacred rite takes on added significance. For it is then that the very fabric of the world must be rewoven. Linked by the mystic energies of the Infinite, the Wheel and world are one. Should the holy image be marred, the world will suffer a similar injury. But a black storm is spreading across the Wheel. I liked the book because it has a great description of another world. I enjoyed the world building 🙂

Martha Wells lays out a vivid tapestry of a world, with rich descriptions of a city, the landscape and the different peoples. Then she weaves in an intriguing system of magic and spirits, letting the reader gradually uncover the logic for themselves, without spending paragraphs explaining all the background.

A strong and unusual warrior-priest character is centre stage, and the plot unfolds with danger and surprise. All the actions seem plausible for the competing characters, yet this is far from being a predictable fantasy plot line.

Great writing, and the audio performance is pretty good, you feel the actor wants to share this story with you.

Highly recommend this!

Vivid worlds, unusual storyline

Took a while to get into the flow of this, and a long build towards a fairly rapid denouement. Also a LOT of world building detail to take in. But a good narrator who shaped some believable characters and pleasant enough. Much preferred City of Bones in Wells’ early standalone work.

book was good (not as good as murderbot) but overall experience really marred by narrative style. some out right mistakes in pronunciation and a plodding expressionless delivery . very poor.
