Schließlich ist alles nur ein Spiel – oder? Ein Spiel, bei dem sich die Protagonisten in einem uralten Hyperraumnetz bewegen und auf die unterschiedlichsten außerirdischen Zivilisationen treffen. Ein Spiel, wie es realistischer nicht sein könnte. Die Erde ist menschenleer. Das Schicksal der Menschheit ist unbekannt.

Die eurasische Flotte ist im Darg-System angekommen und mit ihr unzählige nichtsahnende Spieler, die gespannt dem Abenteuer ihres Lebens entgegenfiebern. Für Zander dagegen ist aus dem Spiel bitterer Ernst geworden, als er sich für den alternativen Handlungsstrang entschieden hat. Das Mädchen, das er liebte, ist fort. Sein Nervensystem ist mit künstlichen Neuronen verwoben, die Fragmente einer uralten KI enthalten. Ohne die implantierten außerirdischen Artefakte kann Zander im tödlichen Cyberspace des Phantom-Servers nicht überleben. Immer wieder führt ihn seine Quest an den Rand des Abgrunds.
