Młody następca tronu wyrusza w podróż, podczas której ma poznać kraj i zrozumieć przyczyny jego kłopotów. Kiedy po śmierci ojca zostaje nowym faraonem, Ramzesem XIII, posiada już pomysł na reformy, mogące przywrócić świetność Egiptu.

Epicka opowieść o kobietach poszukujących swojej tożsamości w czasach narodzin emancypacji. Prus przestawia bardzo zróżnicowaną galerię postaci kobiecych, z których każda inaczej postrzega swoją rolę w świecie. Mamy więc główną bohaterkę - Magdalenę Brzeską, naiwną, zagubioną altruistkę, którą przytłacza świat obłudy. Nie pomogą jej mądre rady profesora Dębickiego, alter ego pisarza. Madzia pracuje na pensji pani Latter - kobiety samodzielnie walczącej o swój byt, a jednocześnie żyjącej pod tyranią własnych dzieci, w tym pięknej Helenki.

Aleksander Głowacki, who wrote under the nom de plume Boleslaw Prus, was born on 20th August 1847 at Hrubieszów in the Kingdom of Poland, at that time, controlled by the Russian Empire. It seems he had doubts as to the scale of his talents and early on adopted the name ‘Boleslaw Prus’, for both his journalistic and literary offerings. His work as a short-story writer met with much acclaim. He wrote several dozen of them, originally published in newspapers and ranging in length from micro-story to novella. His keen observation of everyday life and sense of humor are evident in them.
