Nito presents life at a San Antonio mission from the viewpoint of a young, native Indian child, new to the mission and its ways. Little Nito isn't quite sure what to think of the "witch" at the mission, but he surely doesn't want to get near her. Later, he finds that appearances aren't always what they seem to be.

Mario is a typical grade school boy who is afraid that others, including his teacher, see him as weird, mainly because he sees pictures hidden in everyday objects. When the problem begins interfering with his school work, his teacher talks with him to set him straight.

With the help of his aging best friend, Oso the German Shepherd, he hopes to do just that, but on his first night on duty, Poquito encounters a terrifying enemy. Poquito fears his career as a watchdog is over before it even starts. When the intruders return the next night, Poquito, with Oso's help, has one more chance to prove himself as a watchdog.
