Very interesting story. Unique setting and nice mystery. I did not solve it by the clues. Quite a gentle, slow story. Enjoyed this very much.

I loved this book and will read/listen again. An intriguing and unusual central character in Gabriel Ward KC and an enchanting sense of place and time, the Inner Temple of 1901. The story draws the reader into a mystery full of vivid characters set in the strange world of the Edwardian law courts in London. Irresistible!

I am very happy to have found this new author. Sally Smith has created a very likeable detective in Gabriel Ward. I have enjoyed every second I have spent with him and the world he lives in. The story is gripping, the characters are great and the writing is wonderful. I couldn’t stop reading. I have pre-ordered the next in the series and can’t wait for July when it releases. I should also mention the quality of Matthew Lloyd Davies reading of the book. He really brought it to life.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It is a detective story of an unusual genre; a reclusive and unworldly barrister tasked with investigating a murder in chambers in the early 1900s. The characters were well rounded, The storyline was intriguing and the attention to detail of the period excellent. Gabriel Ward’s advocacy in court was a delight to listen to. I would love to read another story featuring him.
