About this listen

Jacqueline Keys was ostracized from her small hometown of Pine Springs, Texas, when she was 17, sent away because she was gay. Her family was the largest employer in the county, owning Pine Springs Lumber, and her father was mayor of this small town. Her mother could not accept the fact that her only child was gay, could not tolerate the gossip about her family. So, with a hundred dollars in her pocket and a one-way bus ticket out of town, Jacqueline was told not to come back until she had come to her senses. And that included being prepared to marry the son of a business associate of the family.

Fifteen years later - long after she'd hitch-hiked to Los Angeles, long after she'd worked nights to put herself through college, and long after she'd written her first best seller, No Place for Family - Jacqueline is persuaded to go back to the tiny town of Pine Springs after her father's death.

The quick trip she'd envisioned for the funeral turns into weeks as she learns her father's business is suddenly hers to manage. And she is also again face-to-face with the woman who, as a teen, had been Jackie's first crush. She and Kay had been inseparable as kids and later as teens. They find themselves falling back into their old habits, and Jackie is soon fighting the same feelings she'd had when she was 17.

Feel good story. I really liked it

Not overly complex or emotional. Easy to listen to, bit I really liked it. Given that we all can remember our first crush on a girl, this is somehow comforting to listen to.

Recommend reading it ;)

Sensitive and strong it wil hold your attention..

The characters were believable and the plot although predictable was strong and held my attention. The childhood infatuation of the heroine was very plausible and probably sadly one with which many can identify.
Not overly full of overt sexual descriptions which was in its favour, sensitively done.
The strong woman characters were well written and when I finished the book I felt as if I wanted to know them better and hope for a sequel.

My first Gerri Hill

I honestly adored these 2... the intimacy, the friendship, longing, desire and love... The storyline brilliantly done, keeping my interest throughout... and what a beautiful ending...

Abby, you are the one leading my path through my book journey... I cannot at this time do without your wonderful narration... you are a true artist...

very good

As to be expected another good story by Gerri Hill and brought to life by Abby Craden.

A very compelling story good characters and some strong scenes. Author and performer make for an easy pick.

Another great Gerri Hill...

... She more than pulls it off again. Another gently sweet love story with just the right amount of angst and Abby Craden does a terrific job too.

Great listen

Jacqueline receives a call from her father's attorney advising her of her father's death and returns to her home town for the funeral and Will reading to find that her Father left her more than she barged for.

Returning home after 15 years she meets up with her old best friend Kay who she happened to have her first crush on when she was younger. After catching up, It's clear there is a deep connection between Jacqui and Kay. However, Kay is scared to come out of the closet and be with Jacqui. Will Jacqui return to LA on her own leaving Kay behind or will Kay be her true self and be with Jacqui?

Abby's narration was amazing as always, I can listen to her all day and I do 🤣 her southern accent for Kay is wicked, thoroughly enjoyed it!

another good one

really good read, love the accents and the tension. however slightly less spice than other books, with two scenes feeling very cut short. wish it could've gone on for longer but it was interesting, you really routed for them and loved the side characters
