About this listen

Devastated by the discovery that his wife, Helen, was murdered, Special Agent Pendergast must have retribution. But revenge is not simple. As he stalks his wife's betrayers - a chase that takes him from the wild moors of Scotland to the bustling streets of New York City and the darkest bayous of Louisiana - he is also forced to dig further into Helen's past. And he is stunned to learn that Helen may have been a collaborator in her own murder.

Peeling back the layers of deception, Pendergast realizes that the conspiracy is deeper, goes back generations, and is more monstrous than he could have ever imagined - and everything he's believed, everything he's trusted, everything he's understood... may be a horrific lie.

Pendergast is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and James Bond.

A man of deep thought and culture and a man of action. These books are rich in both. They must be read in order

Another great book from Preston & Child

Do I have to say anything? Great book but don't like when the end of the story is left for another book. I like better kind of complete story books.

A gripping journey of revenge and revelation

"Cold Vengeance," the eleventh installment in the Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, is a gripping tale that delves into themes of revenge, deception, and the quest for truth. Following the shocking revelation that his wife, Helen, was murdered rather than the accidental death he believed, Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast embarks on a relentless journey to uncover the truth. This quest takes him from the misty moors of Scotland to the bustling streets of New York and the eerie bayous of Louisiana, creating a rich tapestry of settings that enhance the story's tension and atmosphere.

The narrative is compelling, filled with twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Pendergast's journey is not just about revenge; it also explores the complexities of Helen's past, revealing layers of deception that challenge everything he thought he knew about her. The authors excel at creating vivid settings that immerse readers in the story, allowing them to feel the weight of Pendergast's emotional and physical journey. The descriptions of the Scottish landscape and the contrasting urban environments are particularly striking, adding depth to the narrative.

Pendergast remains a fascinating protagonist, showcasing his trademark intelligence and resourcefulness. The return of beloved characters, such as Corrie Swanson, adds depth and nostalgia for long-time fans of the series. The dynamics between characters are well-explored, particularly Pendergast's interactions with those who have their own agendas. However, some new characters, like Ned Betterton, feel underdeveloped and serve primarily as plot devices rather than fully realized individuals, which can detract from the overall impact of the story.

While the book starts strong, the pacing can feel uneven at times. The middle sections may meander, with numerous red herrings and convoluted clues that could frustrate readers seeking a more streamlined narrative. Some plot points seem to drag, making the pacing uneven. Additionally, as a middle book in a trilogy, "Cold Vengeance" ends on a cliffhanger that may leave some readers feeling unsatisfied. While this is a common trope in series, the lack of resolution can be frustrating, especially given the buildup of tension throughout the book.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the latter part of the book features electrifying action sequences, including a thrilling yacht raid that showcases Pendergast's cunning and tactical prowess. This shift towards a more action-oriented narrative is a refreshing change that adds excitement to the plot. Overall, "Cold Vengeance" is a thrilling addition to the Pendergast series that successfully combines elements of mystery, action, and psychological depth. As Pendergast continues his quest for truth and vengeance, readers are left eagerly anticipating the next installment.

Disappointing and unfinished

Have been listening to series and enjoyed it.
This book unfortunately has people behaving completely out of character but still expects belief in story line. I really didn’t enjoy this and it ended practically in mid sentence
