About this listen

Deliciously dark and addictive, The Hazel Wood meets Wilder Girls in this queer dark academia YA novel filled with twisted fairytales and nightmare monsters that will keep you up at night.

On the first day of boarding school, Thomas' parents vanish . . . and he has blood on his sleeve. Stranger still, he won't talk to Andrew, even though he's always loved sketching the monstrous creatures from Andrew's dark fairytales.

Desperate to discover the truth, Andrew follows Thomas into the forest and catches him fighting a monster; Thomas' drawings have come to life.

To make sure no one else dies, the boys must battle the creatures every night. But as their obsession with each other grows stronger, so do the monsters, and Andrew fears that the only way to stop them might be to destroy their creator.

Promising but confused

This story started well despite no real character history and the main character , after a while started (for me) to come across as a bit too weedy and this meant I wasn't rooting for him. I think it's about time more literature included LgbtQIA and that was a refreshing element to the tale. Narration was okay...I feel the switch between Andrew and Thomas could have been clearer. I felt like the story was close to being complete if the characters had been a little richer. Lots going on but all things felt glanced at rather then fully imagined.
