About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
An honest, end-of-career autobiography from widely adored Harlequins and England rugby star Danny Care
They say everything happens for a reason, and I think my life is proof of that. There have been a series of moments, some of them tough setbacks, that have proved over time to be pivotal to the person – and player – I am today. There was the time when my dreams of a football career came to an abrupt end but opened the door for rugby in my life; the ill-judged sledging outing that may have cost me the opportunity to go on a Lions tour; the times when my name made the headlines for the wrong reasons; the choice I made to miss an England tour, which led to meeting the love of my life on a party island halfway across the world; and the devastating moment when Eddie Jones dropped me from the England squad and I thought my international career was over.
I sometimes wondered if it was meant to be but I kept on smiling and I worked hard as I kept my focus on playing the game that I love, that I owe everything to. And now, a little older and a little wiser – and with over 100 England caps, three Six Nations championships and two Premiership titles to my name, I want to tell you my story. The highs and lows, the good and the bad and everything in between.

DECENT
Danny Care’s autobiography is a masterclass in storytelling, blending raw honesty with sharp wit. From the chaos of international rugby to the inner workings of a team that often got things right (and sometimes hilariously wrong), Care pulls no punches. His candid take on Eddie Jones’ management style is both revealing and surprisingly fair—though you can tell there’s more he’s holding back for the pub.
Dubbed the “self-proclaimed talisman,” Care leans into his smaller stature and larger-than-life presence with charm and self-awareness. His insights into the modern game are razor-sharp, offering a fresh perspective on tactics, team dynamics, and the mental toll of elite sport. All delivered in the voice of a man who’s clearly spent as much time honing his banter as his box kick.
For anyone looking to understand the game beyond the pitch—or just enjoy a rugby brain dissecting life with humor and heart—this audiobook is a winner. Care’s storytelling is clever, human, and never short of entertaining.

honest, humble and an all round good lad.
being a yorkshire man I always loved danny care anyway. knowing he was only 20 miles away as a youngster and I played on his home boyhood pitch many many times, all be it 4 years later. only makes me like him more. a wonderfully honest book from a true stalwart of the game. the true meaning of "old reliable"

Enjoyable read and sounds very much written by himself. I think this should sell more copies than Splashdown.

Great book, i was hooked from start to finish
This is a deeply engaging exploration of a career that spans the highs and lows of professional rugby. Told with Care’s characteristic charm and humor, the book peels back the layers of a player often perceived as carefree, revealing the grit and resilience that defined his journey.
I fully appreciated Care’s candid reflections on his life in rugby, from his Yorkshire roots to becoming one of Harlequins’ most iconic players and an England centurion. The narrative’s strength lies in its authenticity—Care doesn’t shy away from discussing the difficulties of maintaining his spot on the national team under Eddie Jones’ notorious coaching regime. He paints a vivid picture of life under a “dictatorship,” offering insight into the toll it took on players and staff alike.
Yet the memoir is far from a tale of woes. Care's optimism and belief in his book’s titular mantra shine through as he recounts the pivotal moments that shaped his career. The rollercoaster trajectory—from crushing defeats to glorious triumphs—keeps readers hooked, much like the ebb and flow of a dramatic rugby match.
This is more than a sports memoir; it’s a story of perseverance, humour, and the hard lessons learned on and off the pitch.
A must-read (or listen) for anyone intrigued by the human side of elite sport
