About this listen

The Fens are burning, and Detective Nikki Galena faces a cat-and-mouse battle with a killer arsonist. Someone is lighting fires. First they target homes and businesses, but then a body is found at one of the crime scenes. More fires are lit. And at each one a single person dies. But the victims have led spotless lives, and apparently there's no connection between them.

Meanwhile, the town is facing a very peculiar threat from a group of sinister Satanists led by a charismatic businessman. Who is burning with anger, and can Nikki stop them before anyone else dies?

Excellent

I have listened to several of this series, all read by the same narrator. Whilst her diction and ability to differentiate between different characters by changing accents and intonation is very good, I do wish that she would research the pronunciation of unfamiliar words.

Good story.

Spoilt by the narration. High pitched female voices difficult to listen to. Story as always worth listening to.

Excellent story.

Great story as always and twists and turns in the plot , don’t think narrator can pronounce some words correctly , Socco is constantly mispronounced as is auburn and found it irritating , the old lady voice is annoying .Would not let that put you off as still a great story .

…really jars! It’s such a shame; Joy Ellis uses some excellent vocabulary, HM simply can’t pronounce too much of it: somebody please tell her how to pronounce SOCO (like sock-o, not so-co), beloved (belove-ed), frequented (Fre-QUENT-ed), and so and so on! Is there no editing/research/rehearsal? It’s driving me nuts! If I didn’t enjoy the stories so much, I would have given up. I certainly won’t be listening to anything else she reads.

Poor pronunciation…

As ever superb plot, decoys, twists and then the final who and why.
my only complaint is the narrator who spoils the whole thing, all her accent sound the same and do appear to change inappropriately.

WOW what a thriller

A truly excellent tale. Made for compelling listening so many twists and turns a great story - would highly recommend this.

Great story, well written characterisation good
I found it difficult to follow; the narrator, the voice actor did not a sufficient range to play the parts. Sometimes it was hard to link the voices to the characters. I found the voice tedious at times even screeching.
It was frustrating to try to unravel the intricacies of the plot through the range of voices. The skills of a great voice actor include the ability to play a range of voices with different genders, ages, accents. These skills were underdeveloped.
A good story, suitably distracting but I will avoid this narrator in the future.

Problems with the voice actor .

I’ve been binge listening to this series. All along the bizarre pronunciation by the narrator has really grated at times, and then in the last book Nikki seemed at times to discover her Scottish roots in her Norfolk accent…. But then along comes Fire on the fens.

The author seems to have forgotten that when Nikki and Joseph got together they were deemed a strange pairing not least because of his very strong religion. ‘The priest’ I believe he was called at one point in book 1 or 2 contrasting with Nikki’s single minded hunting of all things drug.

But in this book the narrator says Joseph is not really religious. Really? Did he have some sort of faith crisis that has been kept from us?

And then there is the increasingly bizarre pronunciation- not being able to pronounce ‘curate’ among so many other things has meant I’ve finally thrown in the towel.

Whatever happens to you Nikki and Joseph I hope you find someone who can correctly pronounce whatever it is! Good luck!

Has the author literally lost the plot? And as for the narrator…
