About this listen
The hardest part of death is learning how to live.
The last thing Alice expects to see at her husband’s graveside on his birthday is a giant, talking frog. On closer inspection, it’s a grown man dressed as Kermit.
Turns out Alice’s husband is buried next to Ben’s older brother Harry, who—as a parting practical joke in his will—insisted that Ben visit his grave each year, on this specific day, dressed in an as-yet-undisclosed pageant of embarrassing fancy dress.
With little but their grief and this one day in common, Alice and Ben form a very special, very strange friendship, meeting just once a year: same day, same time, same place—different silly costume. As the years pass and grief alters, can their unique bond help them cope with the hardest part of death: life?

Excellent book. Annoying narration
What a lovely book! So poignant and well written. I’m afraid I found both narrators extremely annoying though. The female one drove me mad with her affected accent and strange drawling sing song intonations (slightly improved by upping the speed a little) and as for the male … sounded disinterested and bored - may as well have been reading out his shopping list. Great pity. I’ve still given an overall rating of 5 stars because the story and the writer earned them.

So looking forward to Nicks latest book but ...
I have loved Nick's books and waiting for this next one, however, I found this one hardgoing. It is a story about grief and how it affects the lives of two people after about a 1/3 way through it got into a pattern and I felt like saying to the characters please get on with it. I kept going to the end but it was not enjoyable and the monotony of the plot overshadowed the humor in it.

A story of loss and friendship
Loved this book. the story of Ben and Alice was so heartwarming. They have both lost someone so close to them that they struggle to cope with life without that person!
The narration of Alice was a tad grating though.

Excellent story, shocking narration
This was a really good story ruined by the female narration. I couldn’t wait for it to finish just to avoid listening to the crazy intonation and dramatic over playing of the words. It really distracted from listening to the story as I just couldn’t get past how mad her voice was.
The male narration was spot on though and he made me keep listening and persevere with ‘Alice’ as I needed to know how it ended.
Glad I did as the story was great and I like the way it all tied in at the end without it being too obvious.
Anyway I’m now off to audition to be an audible reader as it seems they’ll let anyone do it! 🤣

Very annoying narration.
This book was not poignant , heartwarming or humourous as the reviews raved. But rather, it was pointless, irritating and definitely NOT funny. I forced myself to listen to the end on the off chance it improved but if anything it got worse. I highly recommend that you do not read this book.

Didn’t like the woman narrator who sounded too excited. Story was drawn out in my opinion.
Liked the male narrator, who sounded natural and engaging. Ending was good but unfortunately expected.

what went wrong?
I am a huge fan of Nick Spalding!
I was craving for a new Spalding book and was so excited when I saw a new title from him.
maybe the narration, maybe the story, but first time since I read his stories, I couldnt finish it.
I hope his next one will be better.
