Summary
The long-awaited sequel to Jake’s Magical Market is finally here—and now with more market!
Well, not quite yet. First, Jake has to survive a perilous trek through time if he ever hopes to return home to his friends, his market, and his former world. The last time we saw our intrepid hero, Jake had barely managed to escape being trapped on a dead version of his own world. Using a combination of his new powers, he threw himself backward through time, back to when the god that trapped him first rose to power. There, Jake snatched divinity from the hands of the ascending god, consuming it for himself without any regard for the consequences of his actions. In a surprise twist, such a poorly thought-out plan came with some serious downsides! Now Jake has a big target painted on his back. The jealous gods of this world are hungry for divine power and not afraid to kill another god to get it. Stuck in the past, Jake must learn to navigate a world full of desperate gods, wild monsters, bizarre powers, and weird “cultivating” mortals who claim they can become just as powerful as the gods themselves—as long as they get to sit around contemplating the mysteries of the universe for a few hundred years first. Join Jake on his next grand adventure as he learns what it means to be a newly ascended divinity, how to survive in such a strange new world, and how he might just have an unexpected edge on everyone and everything that’s out to get him—by learning how to craft his own magical cards!
**Boasting a 4.7-star rating with over 11,000 reviews on Amazon/Audible, this sequel is a must-have for fans of Gamelit novels, wild adventures, and stories about regular people traveling to strange new worlds. Also, stay tuned for the third book in the series, which is gonna be even bigger, crazier, and full of even more magical cards. And it’s coming out in just a couple of months!**

it's good but...
To start things of, John did an amazing job taking over from Travis. I listened to both books back to back and the quality of the second book is just as good as the first one.
The writing is phenomenal and really carries the series along compared to many other books within the same genre.
Spoilers below - be warned!!!
Now to the less good stuff about it.
Unlike what the book title describes, not a single minute of the past book and the half was actually in Jake's magical market.
It almost felt like they created this wonderful setting with all the interesting characters, just to leave them behind and continue on - which is a constant in this book. You'll meet interesting characters but then never get to interact with them again, jumping from world to world, when the original world was never fully developed or explored.
Maybe this one is on me, I was hoping for a series where we stay in or near the magical market and see how it develops and how the story continues.
My second biggest gripe is the power levels of this world? Firstly there seems to be multiple ways to get powerful within this world - cultivation was introduced almost randomly. And the 'gods' powers seem flimsy and mortal in comparison with how powers were introduced in the first book.
AGAIN SPOILERS
How does a group of guards kill a god with balista bolts?
Why is Jake so underpowered after becoming a divine entity.
It almost felt like the author tried too much, and it got a bit messy.
However, don't get me wrong. This was a great book in it's own right, but if you're looking for the same vibes that you got in the first half of the first book, you won't really find here.
I'm really excited to see how the third book turns out, and too see if some of the glaring issues will be addressed.

whos needs travis now?
wow. honestly, this book was amazing. j r mathews has done it again. the foundation of the series is rock solid. all of the new powers and characters feel so real. and the lost continent!!!! honestly exicited to find out more. john did an amazing job on this book too. have grown to dislike travis recently and i think john has replaced him in my top 3 narator slots. good things are sure to follow from j r mathews and john i bet. this book was well worth the wait.

New narrator was a hard start but halfway through was totally drawn in
Any new narrator to a series is hard and I myself have dumped some series as I couldn’t just get on with the new one. This was not the case here by a few hours in I couldn’t even remember what the last narrator sounded like and the inflection and personality of the characters came across the same Greta work and great book.

narrator change was a little jarring but was well chosen meaning
fantastic just like the first book.
I ended up listening to it whenever I was doing anything I didn't need to focus on (hoovering washing up ect ect) the narrator change was a little jarring but in no way a deal breaker. the replacement was well chosen and did a good job of matching Jake's voice as closely as possible

narrator change works!
I listened to book 1 and 2 back to back and the narrator change was seemless. The story is just as good if not better than book 1, and now book 3 can't come quick enough for me.

Great job!!!
it was an amazing book and I think you managed to achieve what you set out to do. I listen to book one then right into book two and I didn't feel like there was much of a difference at all. thanks for another great book
